I'd have to imagine Pedon is a candidate to take over at Butler. Hopefully he lands Columbus with Holtmann.

That's a long contract, but I believe he was signed through 2025 at Butler, so wasn't much choice.

I think this is about as good a hire as we could have made, outside of pipe dreams like Billy Donovan and Sean Miller.

I've said since the idea of replacing Matta became a legit topic that the idea that the next coach could replicate Matta's success was a risky idea. While it isn't the standard I personally will hold him to, I think Holtmann gives us the best chance of approaching those days as anybody that has been realistically discussed.

Comparing him to Matta directly, I think he's a superior in game coach and tactician. As far as recruiting, he's recruited quite well at Butler, but I'm not sure anybody will recruit here like Matta did from 2005-2010(ish). There were unique circumstances in place during that period that made tOSU far more attractive for blue-chippers than the current day. However, I believe Holtmann can get more out of his players than Matta did.

Patience will be key. But I think there's reason for more optimism this year than there was a week ago. I think Holtmann can maximize the potential of Guys like KBD, Kam Williams, CJ Jackson, the Wessons, Funderburke, and Potter. They might not be a tourney team this year, but they should be more watchable than we expected.

For the first time in years, I feel optimistic about the future of tOSU hoops. Everybody exhale. We got a good one.

1. Kentucky was down.
2. IU was recovering from the nuke job following the Sampson blunder
3. Purdue was just establishing itself under Painter
4. scUM basketball was an afterthought.
5. The Midwest, in general, was wide open as far as having any "national" powers

Now you have a juggernaut Kentucky program. IU, despite middling results on court recruited very well under Crean and will continue to under Miller. Painter recruits very well. scUM is at least competitive in basketball. And you have solid Ohio programs in Xavier and the juggaloes. It's a lot more competitive field regionally than it was a decade ago.

I'd throw out there that any half decent recruiter should be able to use LeBron/Nike/Urban Meyer and his recruiting/social media machine to do well--- at the very least, to lock down a few top Ohio guys each year.

Each of his three Butler teams made the NCAA tournament. Each of them advanced past the first round. The 2017 edition twice defeated reigning NCAA champion Villanova in the regular season — and lost to eventual champion North Carolina in the Sweet 16.

His recruiting classes have consistently been ranked among the best in the Big East Conference.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for the 2017-18 season.

While I don't think they'll be an NCAA tourney team by any stretch, I suspect they'll be much more watchable than we expected a week ago. I'm intrigued to see what Holtmann and his staff can wring out of these guys.

Without a doubt. I think the atmosphere around the program was so toxic at this point, that expecting any kind of reinvigoration this winter was foolish. Now you have a terrific coach coming in to re-inject some energy into a lifeless program. I would at least expect better effort than we've seen the last 2-3 years, and that's a great start. After that elephant-dung effort against Rutgers, it was clear the players had checked out.
