If I were him, I would have had a bag packed and ready to go about a month ago.

Gene Smith stood silent before the media contingent gathered in Ohio State basketball’s postgame interview room, clenching and unclenching his jaw as he tried to find the words he’d lost.

The decision he made to fire Chris Holtmann on Wednesday wasn’t an easy one for him. Firing someone is rarely easy, but it’s made harder when you’ve developed an admiration for that person’s character.

“It’s really hard,” Smith said sullenly. “When you have good people and you care about people, then it’s hard. When you don’t have a good person, you really don’t care about the person, it’s easier. But when you care about someone like I do, it makes it hard.”

I sympathize with Gene. I know a lot of people are ready for a change at the AD spot, and admittedly I'm one of them. Someone who is more cut throat and willing to push the envelope in terms of NIL and fundraising. I like the new AD hire. But Gene is a good man with good character, and seems to be a good human overall.

Yeah, Gene is a good man; however, he'll always have 2 major blunders on his Ohio State AD record:

1) Not self imposing a post season ban in 2011 after Tattoo-Gate . The 2011 team was 6-6 and not going anywhere. The NCAA imposed the post season ban in 2012 and that probably cost Urban's 12-0 team a National Championship.

2) Giving Holtman a 3 year contract extension in 2022. That cost Ohio State a $12.8M buyout when he fired Holtmann this week.

Heard 97.1 quoting a couple writers saying how Chris was told not to pursue transfers very much and to roll with a young roster this season. Basically placed the blame on Gene. (97.1 wasn’t necessarily saying that, just providing the quotes - I wasn’t tuned in long enough to hear more)

No matter what he was told, losing every away game for over a year is unacceptable. Curious to hear what else comes out though. The writer was extremely pro-Chris and implied he was hosed, and that OSU wasn’t patient. A lack of patience would have had him fired long ago…..

Chris brought in mediocre transfers who barely played for years that took up a roster spot. He finally hit on a transfer this year with battle. What even is this article

He kind of falls in the same boat as CH in that regard, but with better overall results. Just as a fan without the burden of having to fire the guy, I would hate to have to because of the person he is. Gene should've acted sooner but the real mistake was CH's contract in the buyout. Nothing justified that contract. It should've been "here's one more year at the same salary and thank your lucky stars for that".

There were two writers with similar quotes, it sounded like the clips were from audio interviews. Couldn’t catch the source. I also thought it sounded a little weird and personal…
Stephen Bardo….of BTN….was one of the journalists and the other was some guy named Goodman. Today on 97.1 I caught the same discussion when they had Dan Dakich on. DD was complimentary of CH’s character but agreed that something had to be done and it wasn’t personal. DD said OSU should rebound quickly
