CHRIS HOLTMANN ON URBAN MEYER: ‘I’M EXCITED TO KIND OF PICK HIS BRAIN’
There is no disputing what sport is the top priority at Ohio State.
Urban Meyer’s football program reigns supreme. It will always be that way, too, no matter who the head coach is. Ohio State is a football school.
Newly announced Buckeyes basketball coach Chris Holtmann knows that — and he’s OK with it. The man Holtmann succeeded, Thad Matta, proved Ohio State could be both a football and basketball school at the same time. Holtmann will try to replicate that success.
“I love it. Love it. I think it’s great,” Holtmann said during his introductory press conference. “I think it adds to this place. I think it was exciting to me, to be quite honest with you.”
Holtmann comes from a basketball-crazed school in Butler, so this will be a change of pace for him. Value City Arena is, well, quite different from historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Even when the Buckeyes are really good, fans don’t necessarily fill the seats until football season ends. Holtmann said he wants to play a challenging non-conference schedule — which would be a bit different than year’s past — so that might change attendance a bit but not much.
Some might think playing second-fiddle would be unattractive to a potential coach. Holtmann felt the opposite.
“It was nothing but a positive,” Holtmann said.
There’s no doubt the two programs can work together. It can only help the football program in recruiting when the basketball program is soaring and vice versa — though Meyer doesn’t need much help in that regard.
Holtmann said Meyer contacted him after it was announced he’d be the next head coach.
“I have tremendous respect for Urban and I appreciated him reaching out a couple of days ago,” Holtmann said. “I’m excited to kind of pick his brain.”

Assistant coaches' salaries plus benefits compared to Matta's assistants
Ohio State will pay Holtmann's staff a combined sum just over $1 million, according to signed term sheets obtained by cleveland.com through an open records request.
Ryan Pedon will be Holtmann's highest-paid assistant at $395,000 per year. Mike Schrage will make $325,000. Terry Johnson will make $300,000.
All three coaches signed two-year term sheets through June 30, 2019. They are also entitled to bonuses should Ohio State win the Big Ten (8.5 percent of base salary), reach the Final Four (8.5 percent of base salary) or win the National Championship (15 percent of base salary).
All three assistants will also be given a $600 per month stipend for a car payment, eight basketball season tickets and four football season tickets.
Formal contracts have yet to be finalized, and are pending the completion of background checks and approval from the university president, vice president and board of trustees.
The total combined base salary for Holtmann's staff is $1.02 million.
By comparison, the previous coaching staff of Dave Dickerson, Chris Jent and Greg Paulus had a combined base salary of $734,516. None of the previous staff members made more than $300,000 in base salary.

Holtmann says he will beef up the Ohio State nonconference basketball schedule in the future similar to the ones that he had when he was coaching Butler. Could be a few more losses during the season but future preseason seasons will probably be much more entertaining.
Holtmann wants to beef that up. That doesn't mean playing world beaters every game of the non-conference. You don't want your team completely beat up just in time for Big Ten play to start. But it sounds like it will mean a little less Grambling State, and a little more ... well, literally anybody else.
"I think you'll see this, and you can hold me to it, but I think if I'm going to err, I'm going to err on the side of it being more challenging than not challenging in the non-conference," Holtmann said.

No Timetable on NCAA Tourney Return, But Work Already Underway
There is an old saying about not being the guy who follows the guy, but rather be the guy who follows the guy who followed the guy.
In Chris Holtmann’s situation, you would think it would be challenging and stressful following in the footsteps of Thad Matta, who won five Big Ten regular season championships, led his team to two Final Four appearances, and had the most wins in Ohio State Basketball history.

Yeah, and the last two years, the weak schedule didn't even help record-wise (I see you raising your hand UT-Arlington and Florida Atlantic).

It definitely has helped Butler. Last year, he beat five non-conference, tournament teams...Northwestern, Bucknell, Vanderbilt, Arizona and Vermont.

Chris was a senior my freshman year at Taylor. I'm not sure how many people know about Taylor basketball, but they were an NAIA power in the '90s. There were no tryouts and no scholarships. If you didn't quit before the end of conditioning, you were on the team. Conditioning was BRUTAL. My roommate literally ran the soles off of his feet, and wound up in the hospital. We won our homecoming game that year 139-36. The work ethic of the team will be unparalleled. Plus, he's a psych major, so he'll know how to get in the kids' heads.
