Chris Ash (Secondary Coach Jacksonville Jaguars)

Good - not great - recruiter. Solid coach who always seemed to have his team ready to play. Secondary struggled while he was at Wisconsin. LOVES giving wide receivers a pretty good cushion, which can become frustrating. I think he'll be fine so long as he remains as a co-defensive coordinator. He will definitely benefit from better personnel at OSU. His defenses played pretty well in those three Rose Bowls, save against Oregon, which wasn't a huge surprise. Not a big "attack" guy but his defenses will hold up.

If you get a chance, try to find and watch his chalk talk on defending the read-option. He's definitely a sharp guy.

"Good - not great," "Solid coach," "Secondary struggled," "LOVES giving wide receives a pretty good cushion," will "be fine" so long as he's co-DC. Sheesh--this isn't exactly a glowing review. Then again, he did leave Madison for Fayetteville.

Wonderful. Just what I wanted to see.

Ditto...the last thing I wanted to see. Who knows though, maybe with better personnel he will tighten it up. I will say that I was a huge fan of how aggressive the DBs were at Wisconsin against the run and how they were fundamentally as tacklers...even if the coverage scheme isn't overly aggressive, the defense would still improve tremendously with improved fundamentals.

I think giving a cushion at the line of scrimmage is something that is overblown by fans. It ticks off fans to give up a 3rd and 5 on a quick throw when the DBs are off the line. The main problem this year was that our guys got beat while giving a cushion and playing bump and run. The cushion is a benefit most of the time so the DB can read and react with the play developing in front of him. Playing bump and run you have your back to the play. Our problem wasn't the cushion, it was diagnosing the play (oh and actually finding the ball after covering someone successfully).

I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with the young, elite athletic talent we're stockpiling. A book about DBs tackling? I'll take that. "You don't tackle, you don't play. There's plenty of talent behind you, son."

wisconsin's defensive stats during his tenure don't back up any of this.

My Arkansas buddies give less than glowing reviews of the Razorback's defense, and secondary in particular, the past season. Personally, I was hoping for one of the big names/NFL coordinators, like the Texans DB coach or Chizik.

That said, Ash will have a lot more talent at OSU than he ever did at Wisconsin or Arkansas. Let's see what he can do. I hope he makes me eat my words.

IMO, last season was a wash. Brand new system for Arkansas, lack of talent, tough schedule, etc. As you said, he'll be working with more talent than he has probably ever had/will have. We all saw what he did against Ohio State in 2012. Meyer & Herman got out coached and admitted as such.......

Q: Which defense that you faced last year posed the most problems?

A: Absolutely, Wisconsin. Without a doubt. Their defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who I knew from my days at Iowa State and am good friends with … I felt like I got out coached. He was very simple. He did not call one blitz on first or second down. He called one front and one coverage. Within that front and coverage, he could adjust to any formation or motion we gave him. And he had his kids extremely well coached up on recognition of plays and alignments.

We were trying to run the ball into a nine-man front. I did a poor job in not having confidence in our throw game. You have to throw it over their heads and our guys have to make plays if they are going to commit both safeties to the run the way that they did. Even though we won in overtime (21-14), Chris had his guys more prepared than I did. I learned from it. And it’s better to learn from a win than to learn from a loss, I can tell you that.

I love the hire.

The article mentions Arkansas defense was ranked 72nd last year, up from 113th the year before.

Does he fit in with our current defensive philosophy of giving up easy receptions and poor tackling? Not sure I like this hire unless he's comfortable with the bend and break defense we have been running.

Ash graduated from Drake with a bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1996. He received his master's degree in education from Iowa State in 2005. A native of Ottumwa, Iowa, Ash has two children, Tanner and Jacey.

By my calculations, Arkansas has had exactly 8 (1 JUCO) 4-star or higher defensive recruits (according to Scout) since their 2009 class, with only one (Tevin Mitchell) being a starter at the beginning of this season.

For those concerned about the Arky D this year:

Chris Ash deserves lots of credit. Arkansas defense is far better this year than it has been in the past 6-7.Best defense since 06 for Hogs
Wonderful. Just what I wanted to see.
Many successful defenses employ that tactic. The difference is that the successful defenses are sound fundamentally, something ours most definitely has not been in a couple of years. Pretty much everyone says Ash will get them there. Bill Greene says this is a homerun. I trust what he has to say. More importantly, Urban Meyer leapt at the chance to add him to the staff, and his track record earns my trust.
