Everyone likes to talk about scheme and play calling in the media, but its funny how things always come back to the fundamentals. If the 2013 team had just tackled a little better, that season has a completely different outcome.

The biggest difference that I see vs the old school tackling is attacking the near hip compared to getting your head across in front. Very interesting.

Good article, but mentions nothing about the D line which is a little worrisome, IMO. The depth seems to be fine for the LBs and DBs which is reassuring but hopefully it was an accidental ommision and not a serious issue

Well we were worried about depth and experience on the OL last year. But I totally hear you. The lone question is if we have a good rotation on the front 4. Nobody questions Diesel or Bosa, but we need others to step up. To wit, I think that Schutt, Hale, Hill, Munger, Hubbard, Holmes, Lewis, Slade, etc. are going to be the answer for the most part. I think DE particularly is set. My only question is if the interior can hold up but I have the utmost faith in LJ Sr. Too much good coaching and great prospects for us to not figure out something that works.

Yeah, I have no worries about the DEs, my issue is with the DTs, and hoping we can find 1-2 guys that can give Diesel and Schutt a breather in late games. If Diesel and Schutt have to play a majority of snaps, even against lesser teams, we may be in trouble. But its still very early, and LJsr has proved his worth

I imagine we could also play Bosa in spot duty inside to use our depth at DE. A guard one-on-one with Bosa in a passing down is a matchup OSU will take 10 times out of 10.

How Pete Carroll's rugby-style tackle is changing college football

Urban Meyer wanted nothing to do with rugby-style tackling at Ohio State. The idea of defenders using their shoulders to tackle, changing target points on a ball carrier and emphasizing wrapping up around the legs wasn't an easy sell to Meyer. Like so many coaches, Meyer had been taught that tacklers should force their heads across the chest of a ball carrier -- the “head across the bow” model that represented Tackling 101 for so long.

But Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash pushed to change techniques after the 2013 season. Ash watched Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll's video of the Hawk Tackle, which sells the rugby tackle as safer for the head and more efficient to bring down ball carriers. Ash studied his past and present defenses and realized many of his players used rugby tackling anyway, not the technique being coached.

The idea of rugby tackling “was one that I fought at first and I said no, we're not going to do that,” Meyer said. “Chris Ash is very persistent, he's a very good coach, and (like) good coaches who really believe in something, stayed on me. … I listened. I did as much research as I could and ultimately we jumped in. Tremendous success right out of the get-go. You could see the difference.”

Maybe Eli Apple needs to review the above video. During Rutgers' first drive, he tried to should-tackle the RB (James?) in the backfield who was running left...he bounced off the RB and the RB rounded the corner for a 25 yard gain. Had Apple wrapped up, it would've been a 3-4 yard loss instead.

Apple seems to be getting pushed around a bit this year both on run tackling and by more physical receivers. Conley seems to handle the physical nature much better. So much so that I'd consider setting up Conley over the bigger receivers while letting Apple play the smaller ones.

Exactly what I thought. This "hawk" tackle was how I was taught to tackle back in the late 80's. Eyeballs on his belt buckle, shoulder in to his hip, drive your feet and twist.
