Chris Ash (DC Notre Dame)

Jaguars hire Chris Ash to coach secondary

Former Texas defensive coordinator Chris Ash has reportedly landed an assistant coaching job in the NFL. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Ash has agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars to coach the secondary.

In Jacksonville, Ash is set to reunite with Urban Meyer, who he previously worked under for two seasons at Ohio State from 2014-15. During his time with the Buckeyes, he served as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

Ash has been coaching at the college level for the last 24 seasons, but this will mark his first coaching job in the NFL.

Ash, 47, was reportedly under consideration for a return to the Texas staff despite the Longhorns firing fourth-year head coach Tom Herman and hiring second-year Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. But Sarkisian ultimately hired Washington’s Pete Kwiatkowski as his defensive coordinator.

Chris Ash Named Bob Hinton Defensive Coordinator

Chris Ash, a veteran coach with experience in the college and professional ranks, will join the Notre Dame Football coaching staff as Bob Hinton Defensive Coordinator. The hiring will be effective at the conclusion of the University’s standard employment process.

“Chris’ experience of coordinating and leading great defensive units at multiple places really resonated with me,” said Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Marcus Freeman. “His experience both in the NFL and as a head coach are valuable assets he can bring to our program. Chris has a great reputation of being a coach who builds strong relationships, while simultaneously developing his players, and that makes him a great fit for this role.”

Ash enters his 30th season of coaching and has seen success throughout his career in multiple posts, including as a position coach, coordinator and head coach.

.
Ash spent eight years in the Big Ten Conference, including four as a defensive coordinator with four Big Ten championships. Ash led four groups that ranked in the top 25 statistically, including a top-10 defensive unit in 2015 at Ohio State.

Serving as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Ohio State, the 2015 Buckeye defense ranked second nationally in scoring defense, ninth in total defense and ninth in sacks. In his first season (2014), OSU’s defense ranked fourth nationally with 24 interceptions, fifth in turnovers gained (33), 13th in sacks (3.00 per game) and 14th in tackles for loss (7.3 per game) en route to a Big Ten and National Championship.

He played a role in the development of several notable players, including defensive end Joey Bosa, a unanimous first-team All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten, along with several others including cornerback Eli Apple, defensive back Doran Grant, defensive tackle Michael Bennett, linebacker Joshua Perry, defensive tackle Adolphus Washington, safety Vonn Bell and linebacker Darron Lee.

ND names it's DC coordinator position after somebody else? The Bob Hinton Defensive Coordinator is Chris Ash? That's weird.
As far as I can tell, and I am not spending another minute on it, but its like an endowed professorship, and probably Bob Hinton gave ND a pile of $ to name it after him.

The rest of us need not go along with it.

Alumnus Richard Corbett makes $35 million in gifts for academic building and football coaching endowment

Two gifts totaling $35 million from University of Notre Dame alumnus Richard Corbett will underwrite the construction of a 280,000-square-foot building on the east side of Notre Dame Stadium and endow the head football coaching position at the University.

A $25 million gift is in support of Corbett Family Hall, which will house the Departments of Anthropology and Psychology and a digital media center, and the remaining $10 million will establish the coaching endowment.

Corbett Family Hall strikes a stunning silhouette rising above the east side of Notre Dame Stadium. But for the Departments of Anthropology and Psychology, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Below the club seating, terraces, and press box on the building’s top three levels, faculty and students from these two social science departments will come together in the new 289,000-square-foot structure, made possible by a leadership gift from Notre Dame alumnus Richard Corbett.
