Cholesterol Question(s) MERGED

Statins, the class of drug that Lipitor and Zocor belong to, are very well tolerated. If you did an internet search, you would see all sorts of horror stories, but it is all overblown.
Nausea and upset stomach is uncommon.
Your doc needs to check your liver enzymes occasionally. If there is an elevation, he may stop the drug. But the chance of causing serious liver damage is basically zero.
Muscle aches are not common but could potentially signal a serious complication so you would need to tell your doctor immediately.

To put it simply, aspirin is more dangerous than lipitor

Thanks for the heads up. What's the most diet can reduce cholesterol, 20-30 points?

I figure it is a matter of time before I get put on some drugs, but I am doing as much as I can to control my cholesterol through my own habits.

A couple of olders guys I work with joke that they like to mix their Lipitor in with their nachos.

Went to the Doctor about 8 months ago. My Bp was 160/120 and cholesterol was over 600. (that is no lie). I used to eat hamburgers for lunch, and steak for dinner 3-4 nights a week. I am talking big steaks,
with potatoes and butter and all the fixins. I have been on high BP medicine
and Tricor since and my BP and cholesterol is now in the safe zone. I did change my diet to chicken breast, fish, tuna, salad and have not had a steak since. I am 42, 6'1" and weighed about 245. Lost 20 lbs since the diet change. Now trying to kick the smokes and brews.

I disagree. The FDA was going to pull one of the statins off the market, and they may have already done so. I think it was "Crestor". The statins can have serious side effects. I tried a few different ones and ended up quitting them altogether due to side effects.

Also, I think the whole cholesterol thing is mainly just a way for drug companies to scare you so they can make money off of you for the rest of your life. I have been unable to find any scientific evidence that was NOT financed by makers of the statins, that says high cholesterol will guarantee you a heart attack and/or diabetes. I know people who have had extremely high cholesterol and tryglcerides for their entire life and never had any problems. Personally, I just exercise for at least 30 minutes three times a week and try to eat fatty foods in moderation. I am unwilling to make significant lifestyle changes based on the research I have done on both cholesterol and tryglcerides.

Yea, but he's a Dr. and their answer is always medication. I love his recommendation to get on cholesterol-lowering drugs and eat whatever the hell you want. Yea, that's right, taking medication will fix everything, it has nothing to do with lifestyle, diet or exercise.

Of course lifestyle is important. but how many people can stick with it for a LONG period of time? very few. Statins are amazing at lowering cholesterol and the bad press they have received is just the work of ignorant people. Crestor does have worse side effects than Lipitor and Zocor but they are rare. Some doctors have told me in todays litigenous society, aspirin would never be approved for over the counter use because of its serious side effects. Yet millions take aspirin every day and dont bat an eye.

There are numerous studies showing the benefits of statins. of course most are sponsored by drug companies. For somebody to do a study, somebody has to pay for it and give the medicine for free since the patient and their insurance companies wont pay for it. But the studies have been well done and you would be a fool to ignore the proponderance of evidence.

I live in Pittsburgh? learn something new every day.

coronary artery disease

My father had coronary artery disease and I am very scared about getting it from him. I brought my cholesterol down with diet but my triglycerides are very high. I am really trying to bring it down because my father just had open heart surgery. I don?t want to go through that. Does anyone know if it?s bad to have those high level triglycerides though the cholesterol is good?

Yes, it's bad. Ever had your blood sugar checked?

Make the lifestyle changes necessary to bring your triglycerides and cholesterol down. Better than just trying drugs that can have serious side effects. Live an active, healthier life style.
Get outside!
