Cholesterol Question(s) MERGED

I just had my cholesterol reading and everything was fine, but I want to try and raise my HDL levels. They were at 44 and I know 40 is the cutoff. Does anyone have any good tips to try and raise the number as my understanding is the higher the HDL the better?

this will surprise you... and I swear it's the truth...
a few years back, my physician asked how much beer I drink...
told him a couple a month... he instructed me to drink more beer...
said it would specifically increase my HDL...

I haven't picked up a lot... maybe to a half dozen or so during the winter...
but well over a dozen in summer (yard work) months...

and my ratio numbers are great... swear...

This isn't about cholesterol, but...

What is a safe low for a resting heart beat. Earlier in the year one of my football coaches commented that he had a check-up and his resting heart beat was 46. Is that safe for someone to have? Is that even possible for someone to have?

Lance Armstrong when he is Tour De France shape has a resting heart rate in the 30s. That should answer your question. </p>Omega-3 fish oils can raise HDLs, but you have to take a LOT for it to have any effect. More than any sane person could take. They now sell fish oil tablets at health stores which are easier to take.

That is preferable for me as I am not a fan of fish. Any certain kind of fish oil tablets or is there only one kind?

Damn, now I have to drink more beer.

Kinch - I did find something after your post about eating half an onion a day. Thank God I am already married and not having to eat that and search for a wife.

tell me I read this incorrectly... you look for every opportunity to go fishing... hooky from work... tell the wife you're having an affair... and every time you head north to go fly fishing... and you don't like fish?? :banger: .. isn't that like a vegetarian that hunts?

You know I'm not quite right in the head. I'll eat fish in a restaurant, but cannot stand to have it cooked at home. Plus, if you ever read the warnings about eating fish out of Michigan waters you really would not want any.

I fish to relax, not to eat. Catch and release all the way.

Lowering Cholesterol

Mine is OK but didn't know what some of you did to keep your cholesterol down?

I used to eat oatmeal everyday but got sick of it after a few months.

Any other tips?

My dad has started drinking Green tea flavored with Lemon.

He had quadruple bypass 2 years ago at age 53. Doesn't smoke or drink but the genetics in my family are horrible when it comes to heart health.
