Chip Kelly (OC Northwestern)

I want Chip back.

Hopefully Chip has stopped having dreams of returning to the NFL and is done with the stress of being college HC.

Day obviously trusts Chip. And with all of his experience, Day can delegate some of his responsibilities to him and avoid stress and burnout, thus extending his career.

Has any NCAA program had two former NFL head coaches as coordinators at the same time?
Bama under Saban would be my first guess

The more I think about it the more I would like to see Chip to return to Ohio State. To have three different OC's in three years could be a disruption to the offensive flow. Chip and Day are like peanut butter and jelly. They are better together than a part. Relationships are key at Ohio State. Chip knows Day better than anyone. Chip knows many on the football staff. Both on the field and off the field. Chip knows most of the offensive players. Chip knows the playbook. Very little learning curve here. Chip helped us win a natty last year. All of these things make Chip the overwhelming favorite inmo.

When South Florida hired current Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline as its new head coach earlier this month, there was immediate speculation that Kelly could return to Ohio State as OC. His landing at Northwestern, however, suggests a reunion with the Buckeyes was never in the cards. Kelly also reportedly interviewed for Georgia Tech and North Carolina’s offensive coordinator vacancies, per On3’s Pete Nakos.

It’s still expected that Ryan Day will hire an experienced offensive coordinator to call plays for the Buckeyes in 2026. For the rest of the current season, Day is taking over play calling for the College Football Playoff, though Hartline will remain on staff as wide receivers coach through the end of Ohio State’s CFP run.
