Chicago Bears (official thread)

Bears unveil $5B proposal for new domed lakefront stadium

The Bears unveiled a nearly $5 billion proposal Wednesday for an enclosed stadium next door to their current home at Soldier Field as part of a major project that would transform the city's lakefront, and they are asking for public funding to help make it happen.

The plan calls for $3.2 billion for the new stadium plus an additional $1.5 billion in infrastructure. The team and the city said the project would add green and open space while improving access to the city's Museum Campus and could also include a publicly owned hotel.

"This is not an easy project, but Chicago doesn't like it easy," Bears president Kevin Warren said.

The announcement at Soldier Field comes during a busy week for the Bears. They are expected to take 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the draft on Thursday night and bank on the USC quarterback to solidify a position that has long been a sore spot for the founding NFL franchise.

The team said last month it was prepared to provide more than $2 billion in funding toward a publicly owned stadium in the city.

The proposal calls for $2.025 billion from the Bears, $300 million from an NFL loan and $900 million in bonds from the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority. The funding from the ISFA would involve extending bonds of the existing 2% hotel tax.

The Bears said the project would generate $8 billion in economic impact for the region. It would be built in three phases and take up to five years. The new stadium would be constructed on a parking lot just south of Soldier Field, the Bears' home since 1971. The team's lease at the 100-year-old stadium runs through 2033.

Mayor Brandon Johnson gave a full-throated endorsement, saying the project is in line with Daniel Burnham's "Plan of Chicago." He said there would be no tax hikes or new taxes for Chicago residents.

CJ Stroud takes shot at Bears for handling of Ohio State teammate Justin Fields after drafting Caleb Williams

The former Buckeye defended his ex-teammate after the Bears

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud criticized the Chicago Bears organization for failing to put the right pieces around former Ohio State teammate Justin Fields after the franchise took him No. 11 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Chicago traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason and took USC quarterback Caleb Williams No. 1 overall. The Bears drafted Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze seven picks later in a bid to add more talent around Williams.

"I don't want to throw any shade at the Bears' front office, but why couldn't they do that for Justin?" Stroud said via Bleacher Report's 2024 NFL Draft Live Show. "To me, that makes no sense. They couldn't do this in years prior? No quarterback in NFL history has made three coordinators and two head coaches work. That makes no sense. They are giving Caleb Williams the shot to figure it out with structure and stability, which I love for him. But that's just confusing to me that they wouldn't do that for Justin."

Dallas Cowboys linebacker and Penn State product Micah Parsons agreed with Stroud's take on Fields and said the Bears would have been better off keeping the former Buckeye on the roster.

"I do think it's a great pick," Parsons said of Williams. "I do think they should have held onto Justin and drafted Caleb just because it is a rough transition, and at this point, Justin is a veteran. He's in the league. He can help mold him. It keeps the competition alive. Camp might be a little bit stronger. You always want that good competition in the room. Whatever position you play, you want to come in and be able to compete. I think this is a good pick. Caleb is going to be a good player. He just got to learn some things that are going to allow him to be an NFL QB, and I think Justin would have been a great guy to learn from his mistakes. It's a good pick. He's going to help turn them around. The situation is great."

Fuck Chicago. I hope they never win another damn game! Look at how they are spending and actually putting pieces around Williams. Soon as he gets nailed and bitches up, I hope Justin drags them on every outlet he can find.

Caleb bad-mouth8ng Lincoln Riley for not handing him the starting job. You know, the guy who turned him into the #1 overall pick. Buckle up, Chicago. There's a storm headed your way.

“I told people before I went there that I was going to start and play and beat him out. I thought I’d beat him out in Spring and he was projected No. 1 and all of that,” Williams said. “He started for six games, and so, I kept preparing.

“Lincoln told me ‘keep going.’ It’s something that I didn’t understand, those two words, I did not understand when he told me, because I wasn’t asking him. I wasn’t coming to him to beg for playing time. I never came to him."

“I was so angry, so frustrated, because that wasn’t what I wanted to hear because I felt like I was the best," Williams continued. "I felt like I could have helped us win all the games, getting more reps, and I didn’t get those reps.
As an athlete that plays at a high enough level to be taken #1 overall in the draft, there's no chance in hell that kid didn't understand "keep going", unless he didn't want to.

Steve McMichael enters Hall of Fame in ceremony at his home

i

The most emotional moment of Saturday's Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony took place some 344 miles west of Tom Benson Stadium.

Surrounded by his wife, daughter and members of the Chicago Bears' famed 1985 defense, Steve McMichael's Hall of Fame bust was unveiled inside of his home in Homer Glen, Illinois. McMichael, 66, is bedridden from battling ALS the past three years and has lost the ability to speak on his own. His sister, Kathy, delivered McMichael's enshrinement speech on his behalf in a prerecorded video.

Live video from McMichael's bedside was streamed to the crowd in Canton while ESPN's Chris Berman, who served as the Hall of Fame's master of ceremonies, relayed the message he received from the defensive tackle about his career impact.

"'I do not want ALS to be my legacy,'" Berman said. "'What I did on the field, that's my legacy. Pushing myself to the limit ... farther than anybody else could.'"

On hand to celebrate McMichael's enshrinement were former teammates Richard Dent, Ron Rivera, Mike Singletary, Jimbo Covert and Gary Fencik, among others. Dent spoke to McMichael about his place in football history, which came as one of two members of the 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame class selected as senior finalists.

"Steve, we're here with all your world champion brothers," Dent said. "Back in Canton, we have 378 brothers that are looking for you. You're on a team that you can never be cut from, you never can be released from. When you die on this team, you will still be on it."

Bears' Tyrique Stevenson taunts Commanders fans before Jayden Daniels' miracle touchdown

Stevenson was pointing at fans and posing before the Hail Mary play

The Chicago Bears were left stunned when Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels threw an incredible last-second Hail Mary pass to win their game on Sunday.

What was even more wild was what Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson was doing seconds before the play started. Video on social media showed Stevenson taunting Commanders fans in the waning moments of the game.

Daniels threw the ball down the field to a group of people, and Bears defenders failed to cover the back end. Noah Brown was left alone in the end zone, and as the ball was tipped, he came down with it for the 18-15 win.

"To Chicago and teammates my apologies for lack of awareness and focus …. The game ain’t over until zeros hit the clock. Can’t take anything for granted," Stevenson wrote on X afterward. "Notes taken, improvement will happen."

Bears head coach Matt Eberflaus spoke out the final play in the postgame press conference.

"It comes down to that last play, and we've practiced that play a hundred times since we've been here," he said, via ESPN. "I’ll have to look at what the execution was on that, but we have a body on a body, boxing guys out like basketball at the very end.

"We have one guy at the rim that knocks the ball down. We've got a tip guy that goes behind the pile. I've got to look at it and detail it out and make sure we're better next time."
