Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

Neither was the kid not even getting on the bus for the trip.

Actions have consequences as both parties are finding out.

Agreed, but one party is a 19 year kid acting in a singular context....the other is a multi-million dollar program with heavy interests and perceptions to consider.

Neither was classy or smart...but ND should be bigger in this situation.

One is a kid, who is mature enough to admit his wrongdoings.

The other is a seasoned institution led by an adult who continues to place blame on others.

It was no secret Weis preferred Jones at WR, who contemplated transfer during the offseason, only to be made the starter at QB for one whole quarter.

We'll agree to disagree b/c I see both sides of the argument. But I know the fact that this involves a coach and program that we hate that it may lead to people automatically jumping on the player's side.

Would we have the same opinion if it was, say, SMU's QB?

On what grounds?

It's not like this is the first time a school has refused to let an athlete out of their scholarship.

Funderburke comes to mind.

I figure ND is within their rights to not release, but I just don't understand the point.

Good move on ND's part. If they let him out, other players could say, "Sure we can leave at any time and go somewhere else"

The kid signed a piece of paper and then ran away crying when things got tough. He deserves to be taught a lesson.

Old enough to vote, old enough to die in war, old enough to face the consequences of his actions. :tibor: somewhere else

Funderburke was a transfer within the Big Ten. By Big Ten rule he was not eligible for a scholarship at another Big Ten school. Same for Kerr.

But in general I agree with the consensus opinion that they should let him go. There is still a rule that he must sit out a year so it is not like players can move without consequences.

Wait a minute....how is it possible for ND to not be "bigger" when CW is involved?

You think I'm :tibor:ing? :slappy: Was it the "I figure ND was within their rights" part?

You make valid points. I still don't see the point, however. It strikes me as a professional team forcing... say... a coach to honor his signed contract evem when it's made clear that the guy... we'll call him Donovan... changed his mind and doesn't actually want to be part of your organization.

If being spiteful, nasty, and vindictive is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Even if ND let him out of the scholarship for this year, what real impact would that have on NIU's ability to have him under scholarship this year? Their AD spokesperson has already gone on record that NIU is at their scholarship limit this year. Thus, Jones would be paying his own way this academic year at NIU now matter what ND did or did not do.

I keep reading this thread for the same reason I look at a car wreck on the highway. I realize that someone is suffering, but I just have to catch a glimpse.

If I were a NoD fan, I think the most troubling thing of all would be the fact that Weis is alienating former players. One of the great things about Ohio State FB tradition is the continued connection our former players have w/ the program, including some of the alums in the NFL returning to Cbus in the summer for workouts, etc. I think there is a huge upside to this continuity between past and current Buckeye players.

As Charlie continues piloting NoD in this downward spiral, I'll continue to gawk. I just can't help myself. :sneaky:

Actually, if you were a NoD fan, you'd be making excuses and arguing how Weis' doing so is genius and will pay ample dividends later..... like ... next year.
