Charlie Weis (ex-Kansas HC, ex-Fla OC, Notre Dame legend, UnDecided Schematic Advantage)

On expectations at Notre Dame: "Winning nine or 10 games is not the goal. Winning them all is the goal. The BCS bowls are nice, but the best bowl game is the one we haven't played yet. I have four Super Bowl rings. I told Charlie Jr., the day we win a national title at Notre Dame, the day I get a national title ring, is the day I never wear those Super Bowl rings again."

So he's going to be buried with his rings?

I do want to give a heartfelt thanks to Charlie Weis:

Jabba, thank you for everything you've done for my generation. You planted a seed with your comments about Jim Tressel 5 short years ago - and today that seed continues to grow deep within my soul. Without you, I would have never felt this way towards Notre Dame as they really have not been too relevant in the last 15-20 years. Thank you Chuck.

It took me a bit of searching, but I finally was able to dig up the quote.

http://bluegraysky.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_bluegraysky_archive.html

"When it comes to recruiting, unlike some head coaches, I like to hit the road and pound the pavement ? because I think it makes a good statement if the head coach of Notre Dame is out on the road. It's the only way I know, and it's the only way it will be for me."
He won four Super Bowl rings (one with the New York Giants and three with the Pats) and isn't shy about using that jewelry to his advantage.
Asked if his four NFL titles trump OSU coach Jim Tressel's five national crowns, Weis flashed the hood-ornament-sized Super Bowl ring adorning his hand and said, "I think my ONE trumps his five."
His NFL background ? and that bling-bling ? give him instant credibility.
"If I go into a kid's house," he quipped, "and I can get him to look at my hand instead of my face, I think I've got a good chance."

Lord of the rings

Weis? ego continues to manifest itself for all to see. Asked which was more impressive, Weis? four Super Bowl rings or Jim Tressel?s five national championship rings, the Irish coach raised his hand, motioned to the Super Bowl ring on his finger and said, "This one is bigger than all five of his put together."

$18mil will buy a lot of steak and mash potatoes! He don't need another job.
But it's an easy bet to see why the Domers will just screw this all up again. They want to be like Harvrad and Yale but have a Florida football program. Not gonna happen. Have they learned anything? A solid coach will make them a winner, just not USC or Florida.
On ESPN radio last night they played a clip from the presser where he was fired. The AD, Captain Jack Sparrow, said "Charlie won a national championship this year. He finished #1 in graduation, and we take that very seriously.."

Yeah, so you fire the guy....

As for his one Super Bowl ring, now that we know he cheated to get it by videotaping opposing teams playcalling signals, it's not worth crap either.

As for Jim Tressel's national championship rings, they enrich in value as time goes on.

Before becoming Harvard or Yale -- or Chicago, or Northwestern, or Michigan, or the rest of the Big 10, Stanford, Duke, Rice, Texas, Vanderbilt -- they need to seriously upgrade their graduate education programs, research facilities and libraries and all the time keep the Cardinals at bay.

god, everybody is just jealous. i hate to say it, but weiss is a FANTASTIC coach. nd's offense used to suck. he comes in, and all of a sudden they are playing with an incredible amount of crispness and efficiency. watching them is like watching a finely-tuned machine. it is not a "gimmicky" offense that other teams will soon catch on to. it is professional and extremely consistent. once he's able to recruit halfway decent players on defense (and he will...ND is going to be hauling in some ridiculous classes now....if i was a high-school player, and i couldn't go to OSU, ND would probably top my list), the irish are going to dominate. sucks, but it appears to be headed that way.
Too bad his defenses stank to high heaven.

Not gimmicky? So how did they not gimmick the fake field goal against USC, the fake reverse pass against Stanford. Charlie loved gimmicks, legal and illegal, all part of his "strategic advantage" ego.

And now, Charlie, as the sun is setting quietly in the West and you are about to slip out of our consciousness, I just want to take a moment to remind you that in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be a fat, arrogant fuck.

eh. There's a huge difference between gimmick plays and a gimmick offense. Notre Dame was the epitomy of a pro-style offense. Calling a fake field field goal, or reverse doesn't make an offense a gimmick.
