CFP Title Game, Alabama vs tOSU, Jan 11, 8:15 ET on ESPN, Miami

2020 Alabama had:
  • Heisman Trophy winner (Smith:WR), plus #3 (Jones:QB) and #5 (Harris:RB)
  • Best running back in CFB (Harris)
  • Best wide receiver in CFB (Smith), plus Waddle, Metchee III, Harris, Billingsley, and Bolden
  • Joe Moore Award Offensive line, plus Best offensive lineman in CFB (Leatherwood)
  • Efficient game manager QB (Jones) who played as good as Joe Burrow did in last year's CFP Championship.

Ohio State had:
  • No significant DL had excelled in getting QB sacks.
  • 2 starting DL (Smith Togai) and out for the entire game.
  • 1 DL (Cage) injured early in game and did not finish.
  • A defense that had an "Achilles heel" of not having as good of pass defenders as recent prior years.
Just sayin':

1) Alabama just had "the perfect storm" situation when they had the ball, i.e. one of the all time best college offenses (if not the best) against a "subpar" Ohio State defense.

2) Actually I don't really care who won the game MVP trophy; however, I would have voted for Mac Jones. He was the key to Alabama's offense, which was (basically) just as effective in the 2nd half without Smith, and he just "played out his ass" the entire game: i.e. 36/45, 464 yards, 5 TDs, 0 ints.

So because I'm a glutton for punishment, I went back and watched the 10 men on the field play.

Trey's loss was monumental in falling behind

Osu's previous drive they called a lateral run for teague who is not going to succeed. They lost yardage and settled for a fg.

Down 11, they had a wide open first down if not much more to teague, but an imperfect throw and not ideal pass catcher led to an incompletion.

Two plays later the outside wr is open for six on the ten men on the play mixup, and fields oddly settles for an easy throw when he thought he had a free play.

That's when the game ended. Flip those two and it's very possibly a 28-28 game, and no time for more than 1 more score by Bama, if that.

Instead it's 17-35 and it already feels insurmountable, especially with Bama getting the ball first.

I didn’t notice this 10 man play, what is it?

People keep calling the Teague 4th down run a bad play call and a stretch, wide run etc. That was a basic Zone run play, Teague 100% decided to bounce the play on his own. That play was not necessarily designed to be a wide run, it is a Zone and the back has to make a read. In that situation, the back has to understand the situation and know he has to get 1 yard. You absolutely cannot bounce that play in that situation. I cannot imagine you can lay the blame on Alford for that either. Teague just fucked that up big time. That one wasn't on the coaches. Teague needed to put his head down and get one yard on his own if he had to, but you NEVER EVER bounce that play in that situation as a back and I am certain he has been told that before.

Bama ran a guy off the field late on third down, Fields snapped early and basically threw the play away because he assumed they caught Bama with 12 on the field for a penalty, but the guy who ran off was the 11th player, leaving 10 on the field, no penalty, and Ohio State punting.

Last year against Clemson I would argue was a wash. This year a clear yes. But I mean, jeez, I would hope Ohio State would be able to out scheme teams at least occasionally.

The practice issue is a fair point.

There is absolutely no way Coombs (or Coombs + Mattison, however you want to slice it) was the best possible candidate for the job but I will stop harping on it.
Eh I'd argue Clemson last year was Dobbins and Wade going out not that they were a wash. But that's neither here nor there Trey was a huge loss because without Williams due to covid we lost the cutback which we killed Clemson and Northwestern with on the over pursuit. Same with Dobbins. Teague is a one cut and then hit the hole hard with speed and some power guy. He's not a cutback guy he doesn't have the wiggle needed there and we could see it both last year against Clemson and this year against Bama. Teague cannot punish over pursuit like those two were.

1st down - wide open screen pass falls incomplete
2nd down - dangerous jump ball, OSU WR defends branch from INT in front of saban
3rd down - confusion near MLB, #3 runs in and yells at your guy to get off the field (which is wrong, he's the 11th). OSU hurries up to snap it. Trips left all run verts. The safety has to stay inside on Ruckert. Olave is uncovered down the alabama sideline, at worst, a 30 yd gain, possibly a TD

Last play was with 3:07 left.

OSU punts, down 17-28, and Bama essentially ices the game 35-17. Bama would have time to score, but momentum would look very different.

Which is especially devastating when Alabama doesn't have to honor Justin's feet either.

What a spoiled punk. OSU lost more games in my freshman year than they've lost in the last 4 years combined.

Hell, my freshman year they even had a losing record (i.e. 4-5). My sophomore year the team started out 2-3 and they were hanging Woody in effigy. I'll take any season where we have just one loss and are in the CFP Championship Game in a heartbeat.

Too me the Buckeyes were flat from the get go. We beat Clemson so here we are.
It was apparent that Coombs was clueless as to what to do to stop them.

Keep in mind we all cheered when Coombs returned to the Buckeyes....

Alabama had 3 guys catching passes that will go in the 1st or 2nd round of the 2021 NFL draft, and a QB who will be another 1st round pick playing out his ass "throwing dimes". I don't think any of Ohio State's defensive backs that played in the game will be a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round pick in this year's (or any future year's) NFL draft*. Name me a defensive coordinator that you think would have been able to stop Alabama's passing game with the Ohio State defensive personnel available for the game. Brent Venables?, Jim Leonhard?, Kevin Steele?, Chris Ash?

* the only exception might be Shaun Wade, but only if he returns in 2021 and excels as a safety.
