CFP Title Game, Alabama vs tOSU, Jan 11, 8:15 ET on ESPN, Miami

Keep in mind we all cheered when Coombs returned to the Buckeyes....

Alabama had 3 guys catching passes that will go in the 1st or 2nd round of the 2021 NFL draft, and a QB who will be another 1st round pick playing out his ass "throwing dimes". I don't think any of Ohio State's defensive backs that played in the game will be a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round pick in this year's (or any future year's) NFL draft*. Name me a defensive coordinator that you think would have been able to stop Alabama's passing game with the Ohio State defensive personnel available for the game. Brent Venables?, Jim Leonhard?, Kevin Steele?, Chris Ash?

* the only exception might be Shaun Wade, but only if he returns in 2021 and excels as a safety.

Agreed. But the scheme and lack of adjustments surely didn’t help. They could have tried something on the fly during a timeout or a wrinkle at halftime to try to take something away. Instead, they continued to give the same looks and chase Smith across the formation and allow him to get leverage and out-flank the defense every touch he had. And it continued even once Smith left the game due to injury with the white kid and with Meechie.

I get that. But how many catches did Smith have to make in the 1st half before you pull the guys to the side and switch some shit up? Maybe you try something and it fails too, like bracket some coverage Smith’s way and make Jones go somewhere else with the ball or force/bait him into mistakes. Clemson did the same shit on us when Watson and Watkins lit us up for 200+. At some point you have to be like, “let’s make somebody else beat us”. Like someone else posted earlier in this thread or Coombs thread, felt like Coombs didn’t know how to counter punch. Instead of attempting something different, he allowed Bama to go about their business and no adjustments needed on their end. So much for the chess match we were hoping for. Coaching staff got owned last night.

1st down - wide open screen pass falls incomplete
2nd down - dangerous jump ball, OSU WR defends branch from INT in front of saban
3rd down - confusion near MLB, #3 runs in and yells at your guy to get off the field (which is wrong, he's the 11th). OSU hurries up to snap it. Trips left all run verts. The safety has to stay inside on Ruckert. Olave is uncovered down the alabama sideline, at worst, a 30 yd gain, possibly a TD

Last play was with 3:07 left.

OSU punts, down 17-28, and Bama essentially ices the game 35-17. Bama would have time to score, but momentum would look very different.
Ah, I thought the officials missed a 12 men on the field call.

This... and it's something I've never understood.

I would've wanted to know why we weren't doubling Smith? Why were we not playing cover 2 to take away the flats?

I remember we played zone some because they attempted the flat pass at one point and Werner blew up Smith causing him to drop the ball. Where was it the rest of the game.

It was 22 and 6 all day and we just allowed it to continue. I know we were short handed and we probably lose regardless. However I think the game plan enabled this game to get out of hand.

I think their best team was the one that beat Notre Dame for the title in 2013.
I liked that team a lot, hard to compare...that O-Line was pretty strong, but I'd give the edge to 2020 because of Dickerson at center. Amari Cooper was the main WR, loved Cooper but Smith + Waddle is the better combo. Mac Jones is clearly better than McCarron. RB's had Eddie Lacy, TJ Yeldon, and Kenyon Drake, more depth in 2012. Biggest difference is OC, Sark vs. Nussmeier is not even close. Defense was better in 2012 but the team lost to Texas A@M, and had an extremely close game against Georgia in the SEC title game. I'd have to give this year's team the edge because of the offense and Sark.

I stopped drinking at half time last night. Unheard of when I watch the Buckeyes. I did not expect the Buckeyes to lose by 28 but this was a perfect storm for the Tide. Ohio State coming off a huge, emotional win, down personnel again to start and lost two key players during the game, and the coaching staff, especially on the defensive side of the ball, inability or unwillingness to adjust the game plan. Be that as it may, even if we were at full strength, I do not see Buckeyes getting closer than 10-14 points last night. This was the best Alabama team I have ever seen and was on par with the LSU team from last year. Props to the Crimson Tide on a season for the ages. Our Buckeyes will be back, I have no doubt. GO BUCKEYES!!

Reporters trying to script a narrative that wasn't there. Najee telling it like it is....LOL
Najee mostly didn't have the lanes this reporter was pretending he did, he just paused, ducked and grinded his way through them.

If he weren't a clown, he would have asked about what Najee kindly helped him to notice, the perfectly called screens and such to catch them out of position. That playaction throwback into the gap left by browning was a killer.

As for that particular reporter, this was him last year

No idea how Alabama or Clemson do it but it's pretty common for their programs. Travis Etienne for example last year, Clemson getting all 4 starters back on their DL after 2017 and obviously Alabama this year.

We lucked into it last year with Okudah and Young being required back and then Arnette showing out. It'd be nice for example if a Chris Olave or Josh Myers came back. Yes Olave is at worse a 2nd round guy but this years WR class is ridiculous and getting away from that could be helpful. Then with Josh yeah he's still a top 2 round guy and I'm not sure how it overall helps him. But he's the type of kid that Alabama or Clemson is getting to stick around.

I know Josh said he'd decide today but I think he should wait until required to actually make a decision. Who would want to come back after a year like this if we are being honest. It had to be so difficult for our guys.

I legit wonder if Clemson and Alabama are being as honest with their borderline kids as they should be.
Saban gets better info than the draft services directly from NFL connections. He normally shoots it straight and that's part of why he's trusted by his players. A couple of years ago, a couple of players listened to their agent instead of Saban and went much lower than expected. Last year, Smith would have been 2nd round at best, he's now a top five player. Saban encourages 1st round draft grade players to go, sometimes even when the players want to come back. If they are second round or third and he thinks they could move up into the first round by playing another year, he'll generally encourage them to come back. That's a big part of his recruiting success, he'd lose credibility pretty quickly by giving bad advice.
