Game Thread CFP Semifinal: Ohio State vs. Clemson, Sat 12/31 @ 7p ET, ESPN

Not here. Yep, I knew this team was young, but as I watched Alabama's offense do its best to give away the gifts their defense presented I kept thinking the Buckeyes could beat the tide a second time in three years.

I don't worry so much about losses to Michigan, Michigan State or the Pedsters - they're local and we get a chance to win back the bragging rights most years - but losing to teams from the South and LA seems to be the Buckeye's kryptonite.

I confess to my disdain for the South - SEC/ACC/USC and Texas and I am vexed by the Bucks lack of success against teams from those areas. Add to that the fact that we only catch games with them when we happen to meet up in a bowl game.

It may take decades to even the score with Clemson, South Carolina and the SEC. Look how long we waited to right matters with Notre Dame. The geographical advantage these teams have during bowl season makes it even more difficult.
I think I'm over it because the fix is so readily apparent. This isn't one of those soul crushing losses that makes you question the state of the program. The solution is so obvious that I'd be shocked if it isn't corrected. Play calling was 85% responsible for the debacle. Fix that and the offense will once again become elite.

It initially started with your comment three pages back: "Tom Herman would have been gone after the Clemson 2013 loss (which is what the fans begged for)." I replied, showing why it wasn't warranted (even if some folks called for it), because Herman never had an games closing to the recent [Mark May]s performances.

You then proceeded to point out three games under Herman as some sort of "proof", despite the fact I specifically mentioned those three games as exceptions, to which I replied, reminding you of those exceptions.

You decided you weren't done, replying "So only regular season games are to be the judgement of a coaches success and failures?", to which, yet again, I replied showing that those two post-season games weren't anywhere near as bad as yesterday, or 2015 Michigan and Sparty...three games under Beck's OC direction.

You then replied about my comparing Beck and Herman, to which yet again I had to correct you.

And here you are, yet again, replying just for the sake of arguing...it ain't me that's confused here.

Those 3 games were very damping losses at the time whether you like to admit it or not. Go on with more rambling if you must though, it's a trait of old men.

Fuck all this bullshit. Urban has rested on his laurels the past two years.

Fuck local bragging rights, ESPECIALLY when you don't even win your own division.

If you aren't getting better, you're getting worse.

Say whatever you want about Alabama. Nick Saban is never satisfied.

Dabo just coached circles around us.

After a few days and some reflection, I still feel like there needs to be a shake up on the offensive coaching staff. However, something I/we may have omitted, or perhaps minimized, is how much credit goes to Clemson. I don't think they are 31-0 good or the Bucks are 0-31 bad. Their QB was a premier player, they have some exceptional talent at receiver, and I think their DL has some dudes. But on the whole, it's not like Ohio State was at a talent deficit that made a win impossible. I think Clemson was just better in their preparation, motivation, and intangibles. It went their way early, their confidence grew as the game went along, and the opposite happened on the Ohio State side. So that asks me to not over-react.

That said, Houston, we still have a problem with offensive identity, consistency, confidence, etc. that we saw intermittently in October, and for sure in late November - and that trend carried over after having a month to work on it. That's on coaching.

But to balance that, whenever I see something like Ohio State's offensive performance Saturday night, I question player leadership and character. Urban said post-game that some players had given an uncommon/exceptional commitment, and some didn't. That's a hmmm.

First time reading this thread after the loss...if what I say repeats what someone else said, my apology.

I believe they used the wrong game plan that was intended for Alabama. You just don't run jet sweeps and those five yards behind the LOS against a fast athletic defense like Clemson...you do that with big tree trunk linemen and make them tire...even if you only get two to three yards this first few series. Our OL is not fast enough for Clemson...may be against Alabama...may be.

I also saw a very timid JT out there. There were multiple times that he should have tug and run for big chunks but ended up with a bad pass or were indecisive and run two seconds too late.

Drop passes in several instances did not help; the kicker looked nervous all game and so did Weber.

Our defense was awesome...look forward to 2017!

May be we will hire Kelly as our OC :-)

I have waited a bit to not post something stupid...the "don't say anything if you don't have anything nice to say" approach if you will. I have thought long and hard and after much reflection...I still don't really have anything nice to say. But I do have things to say in general, albeit much more censored than if I posted this around the time the clock ran out on Saturday night.

We have all of the talent in the God-given world. And we are bringing in the best recruiting class we have likely seen in the upcoming year. As much as I tried to insist to my friends that we were "just too young" and had "the most freshmen in football" after the game to make myself feel warm and fuzzy...that is a fucking bullshit excuse. Bama does it each and every year, they don't give a shit. They just win. Win. Win. Win. And more likely than not again...win. We had a ton of guys leave early last year and are going to have a ton of guys leave early again this year... just like Bama did and will this year again, same damn thing. Yet they do not miss a beat. If you clearly define the standard of where you wanna be, it is easy to define when you are not reaching it (see below). We won a title in '14? Cool. You know how many damn titles Bama has won recently...yeah...they probably can't even remember their favorite one in the last 5 years.

I get that they are the golden standard, but UFM made it very clear that the Bama standard is the one we are seeking to achieve. I will admit wholeheartedly that this was an amazing season by most standards, particularly giving our youth. But when your coach flat out says that is not the standard to be measured by and you recruit basically to the level that Bama does every year for the last 3-4 years, do you accept less? I don't think so. You admit that you are getting out-coached and fix it. We have the athletes and we did not put them in a position to win, simple. Sure, our players made mistakes in the game. But that was about the most piss-poor coaching preparation I have ever seen at Ohio State, only to be rivaled by getting out-coached by Urban himself in '07 against Florida. We got the holy piss beat out of us, up and down the field, without mercy, for the ENTIRE DAMN GAME. It was flat-out embarrassment and there is no way around it. I think it had very little to do with the players, but I could not even finish watching it and that is the only time since I have watched OSU football. I still wore my OSU gear up through tonight everywhere I went and love my school no matter what, and I will never waver on supporting them...but that was just unwatchable.

I do not give a damn where the blame should rest on the staff personally, I just want/trust Urban to fix it. General thoughts are that Warriner and Smith are great position coaches. Alford seems capable. Studrawa is too early too tell, although past reviews leave me uneasy and this year was rough given the talent. Everyone else on the offensive side...I hope they find gainful employment elsewhere (I know, not being cryptic). LJ Sr. is an absolute star and should get a raise. Fickell is unfortunately leaving our ranks but wish him the best, hope we find a great replacement. Schiano and Coombs are amazing, keep it going. Seems obvious to pinpoint the offense but how can you not? We have great talent coming in, sure...but I do not trust our current staff to do anything with it without a change. This offensive staff ruined a great team, I tend to think they could/would do the same with similarly great talent in the coming years as a whole.

But I will close with a positive but candid statement. There is every reason to believe that we will be a force to reckon with in the upcoming years. But we need to make changes on our staff to effectuate it imo. We are a very, very good team and we are really close...but there is a gap to close. I absolutely believe we will do it but not without some upgrades on offense.
