Game Thread CFP Playoff Cotton Bowl, tOSU vs Texas, Fri. Jan. 10th, 7:30 ET on ESPN

Who played in the Cotton Bowl you ask:

Film study:

The Top Five

1. DE Jack Sawyer (89.8)

With one iconic play, Jack Sawyer put Texas on ice and put his name in the echelons of Ohio State's greatest players. His strip sack of Quinn Ewers and the subsequent 83-yard fumble return for a touchdown – the longest fumble return for a touchdown for Ohio State since at least 1949 – earned Sawyer the highest grade (89.8) among all players in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Sawyer also earned the second-highest pass-rush grade (91.8) among all players in the CFP semifinals, slightly behind teammate Sonny Styles (92.3).

2. DE JT Tuimoloau (81.7)

The one-two punch for Ohio State on the field earned PFF's two highest grades on the team. Tuimoloau ended the game with seven tackles, one shy of his career-high. He also earned the second-highest grade for rush defense (80.3) of all the players in the CFP semifinals.

3. CB Jordan Hancock (78.4)

Speaking of career-highs, Hancock set his career-high with six tackles against Texas. His 82.9 grade in tackling and his grade of 75.1 in coverage were second and third among all players in the semifinals.

4. RB Quinshon Judkins (75.9)
Judkins' overall grade of 75.9 was the highest among all offensive players who played at least 10 snaps in the semifinals and his run-blocking grade (71.3) was the highest among all backs.

Judkins (75.1) and TreVeyon Henderson (77.2) were the highest-graded players in the run category. The duo accounted for Ohio State's three offensive touchdowns against Texas. Judkins had two on the ground and Henderson recorded Ohio State's second-longest bowl game receiving touchdown in program history with his 75-yard score seconds from the halftime break.

5. LB Cody Simon (74.2)

For the fifth time this season, Simon was one of Ohio State's five highest-graded players against Texas. The Buckeyes’ middle linebacker recorded seven tackles against the Longhorns.

Not that it applies here but it makes me laugh when I watch a game and someone noticeably has a bad game, later I look and of course PFF has them as one of their highest rated of the game  this happens a lot with DBs especially.
Hmmmmm, I recall a student asking why Havlicek graded out high despite the fact that he was guarding Indiana’s jimmy Rail and Rail lit up the bucks with forty some points. Fred Taylor’s answer was as that Rail would have scored even more if Havlicek hadn’t guarded him.

I forgot to mention it earlier, but this game marked only the fifth time in Buckeye football history that the team had two touchdowns of 75+ yards. Here's the list:

10/23/1971: Wisconsin – Morris Bradshaw 88-yard run; 88-yard kick return
09/15/1973: Minnesota – Archie Griffin 93-yard kick return; Neal Colzie 78-yard punt return
10/10/2009: Wisconsin – Ray Small 96-yard kick return; Kurt Coleman 89-yard interception
09/03/2016: Bowling Green – Curtis Samuel 79-yard reception; Rodjay Burns 75-yard interception
01/10/2025: Texas: TreVeyon Henderson 75-run run; Jack Sawyer 83-yard fumble recovery

Interesting that there’s no game with two offensive TDs.

Interesting that there’s no game with two offensive TDs.
The best that we could do was two offensive touchdowns of 70+ yards against Minnesota on 09/02/2021 when Miyan Williams had a 71-yard run and TreVeyon Henderson had a 70-yard reception. In that game, the Buckeyes also had two other touchdowns of 50+ yards: Chris Olave with a 61-yard reception and Garrett Wilson a 56-yard reception.

On four other occasions, Ohio State had two offensive touchdowns of 65+ yards:

10/27/2001: Penn State – Michael Jenkins 66-yard reception; Jonathan Wells 65-yard run
01/02/2006: Notre Dame – Santonio Holmes 85-yard reception; Ted Ginn Jr 68-yard run
10/03/2015: Indiana – Ezekiel Elliott 75-yard run; 65-yard run
09/21/2024: Marshall – Quinshon Judkins 86-yard run; Emeka Egbuka 68-yard reception

Despite having those two long scoring plays and a pick six (45-yards by Derek Ross), Ohio State lost the 2001 Penn State game.

The Notre Dame game was the 2006 Fiesta Bowl. In that game, the Buckeyes racked up 617 yards of total offense and also had two other long scoring plays: Antonio Pittman 60-yard run; Ted Ginn Jr 56-yard reception.

In the 2015 Indiana game, Zeke also added a 55-yard TD run. On that day, he had 23 carries for 274 yards (11.9 average) and 3 TDs.
