I think they used the awards lists as a big factor in their selections. That's one reason that Doss isn't there as a 3-time All-American - he didn't win an individual award.

As opposed to James Laurinaitis, who is the only player in college football history to win a major national award in three different seasons (Nagurski, Butkus, Lott in '06, '07, and '08, respectively).

That's quite a distinction; and one that he'll almost certainly share with Tebow after this year.

If awards drive the selections, then I understand it. Otherwise, I'm not sure he was a top-5 LB this decade. His prestige & award chest appear as one, but his play never truly matched that.

Leinhart over Vince Young? Hmmm...

Vy's 467 yards of offense outplayed Leinart in the BCS Title game. But if Texas wouldn't have recovered VY's fumble in the 4th quarter, or if the DB Ting would have held onto VY's across-the-field wounded duck, also in the 4th quarter; Leinart would be the easy pick for almost everybody.

A single play (a turnover or non-turnover) can have a gigantic impact on how players' careers are perceived.

Wouldn't it be proper to say that Vince did more with less than Leinhart in college though?

True, Gideon's dropped int proves that. He makes that interception and Colt gets the heisman no contest. What I don't understand is if Colt was the clear cut winner of the heisman before the drop then why does what another player did (a defensive player at that) change that? That is the problem with college football today. I thought the heisman was an outstanding player award. Not which team looks best at the end of the season award.

That being said I still would personally take Vince over Leinart. And I would take both over Tebow. But my Tebow dislike has been well documented on another thread.

They both had great records as starters. USC's talent was tremendous, but the guys at Texas weren't exactly chopped liver (I will stop short of sounding like xrayrandy, though).

VY probably should have won the Heisman - and for that matter, so should have Colt McCoy last year - and Colt will break most of VY's career records for offense and wins at Texas.

I'm just being a Devil's advocate, and pointing out that one turnover (which almost happened twice) would have given VY zero NC's and no Heismans, while Leinart would have ended his career with 35 straight wins, a Heisman, and either 2, 2-and-a-half, or 3 National Championships, depending on your point of view.
