The next class is already shaping up well in many ways. Looking at things from a depth chart perspective, it would seem that a couple positions would potentially be a tough sell based upon the young guys already here. Specifically, LB, WR and O line after the haul that we had this year at those positions and the young depth already on the team. However, we are already off to a great start at O line and LB and it seems like we should be in good shape with this class at those positions with some highly regarded in state guys. It is great that the positions that would likely be the toughest to fill are looking to be in very good shape already which could set us up for an amazing class if we can take advantage of the favorable depth chart at other positions to land some big time out of state guys.
It is hard to say that any position on the team offers a really favorable depth chart as we are looking loaded pretty much everywhere. However, the positions that look most favorable where we might be able to get some big time national recruits from out of state are, IMO, RB, TE and DB.
At RB, Chris Wells will be a name that every RB recruit in the country knows and he is almost a lock to leave early. With Mo graduating, that will leave only Saine and Herron. Those 2 are solid, but won't likely scare a star away, especially since even worst case a recruit is looking at being #3 right away.
At TE, we will be in a similar situation with only Ballard and DiLillo on the roster. We aren't the most glamorous destination for TEs but maybe the lure of immediate playing time and the obvious opportunity to be a multiple year starter will be enticing.
DB may not seem to be an obvious choice, but I think there will be a real opportunity for young guys to make an immediate impact. We will be losing Malcolm Jenkins, Jamario and Patterson and I also suspect that guys like Washington and Russell may take a long hard look at the NFL. That group of DBs that came in together in 2005 all seem close and I think they might bolt. If that were to happen, a top recruit could see a real opportunity at DB U, especially since most of our young backups are unproven.
