CB Travis Howard (Official Thread)

Don't know if it showed up on TV, but he was either giving a 10- to 15-yard cushion, or his receiver was blowing by him if he wasn't. The guy he was guarding had at least two unforced drops, so it could have been even worse. MSU was targeting Howard, and rightly so.

I see the bolded text that reads "if you bash a Buckeye coach or player..." right above this text box, so I don't know if saying this is against the rules or whatever since others are saying essentially the same thing, but yeah... saying Travis Howard had a "rough" day yesterday would be an understatement. They were picking on him like crazy, and I can't blame them; those 15 yard cushions were awfully inviting.

He had good coverage on some plays, but seemed to just be a step too late. Hopefully he's still knocking some rust off, because yesterday was bad. It's things like this that make preseason hype for players useless to me. I want to see it to believe it first.

Hate to pile on, but TH twice got dragged a good 3-5 yards by Cunningham as well. Concerning as that wasn't seen in his first two games back.

As for the long pass for the FG...was that to Cunningham down the right sideline, vs. the zone? In that case you have to tip your hat to Cousins who dissected it well. Can't blame Howard or Johnson on that one.

Howard had a rough day, yes, but it was the furthest from our worries. It seemed to me that they feared Cunningham's size would hurt any close coverage/jams, hence the cushion. A bend but dont break mentality. The later the game got the tighter the coverage...even almost resulting in a pick-6.

Howard wont see too many better QB/WR combos than Cousins-Cunningham. Hopefully he learns from this and gets better.

Travis Howard: 7 Up
Though he's still learning, this redshirt junior brings leadership and some Miami style to the cornerback position

Travis Howard prepares for a play against Wisconsin last week.

Before this season, Travis Howard requested a uniform number change.

He wore No.18 during his freshman and sophomore seasons. Nothing wrong with that number, really.

But the Ohio State cornerback had another number in mind, one that he believed signified the major step he wanted to take.

Howard requested No.7, the number worn by his boyhood idol Chris Gamble, as well as recent stars such as Jermale Hines and Ted Ginn Jr., and past ones such as Joe Germaine and Cornelius Greene.

?I knew 7 was a big number in the Ohio State tradition,? Howard said. ?When you wear 7, it means something.?

Buckeyes' Howard taking a leap
Meyer returns to Ohio
Zac Jackson
August 27, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Earlier this month, new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said cornerback Bradley Roby had gone from being "bored" to a player who's reaching his potential.

Now, Meyer has similar praise for his other starting cornerback.

As the Buckeyes prepare for Saturday's season opener vs. Miami-Ohio, Meyer put Travis Howard among a handful of players he said used training camp to take the biggest jump. The change in Howard, Meyer said, is "monumental."

The entire Ohio State defense could benefit.

"Guys like Travis Howard are going to make a tremendous impact," Meyer said. "I'm not sure how much impact he's had in the past.

"He's a much better player than he was."

A fifth-year senior, Howard made all 11 of his career starts last season. The Miami (Fla.) native has great size for a cornerback at 6'1, 200, and though he has four career interceptions, Meyer said Howard was too often guilty of "lazy footwork" and not focusing on the fundamentals. Meyer said he's seen Howard embrace the challenges set forth by cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs and a strong push for his starting job by talented sophomore Doran Grant.

Howard has made sure that Grant will continue to wait for his turn.

"I see (Howard) much improved," Meyer said. "I really like coaching him right now. He's a lot of fun to be around."

Everett Withers, Ohio State's safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator, said Howard "has the size and speed...he looks like what a cornerback should look like." Now, he's also looking the part.

"We want to see the consistency," Withers said. "The last two or three weeks of camp he's been as good a corner as I've been around."

Oh yeah. If we can get Howard to play up to his potential on the other side of Roby, we have something really special going on. Add in Grant and the way our safeties look and the back 4 are going to be real nice this year.

Nothing makes the back four look better than the front 4 bringing the heat. I think our secondary will LOVE our D Line this year. :highfive:

I am very curious to see the improvement in his game. So often I hear football analysts talk about hips for corners. My gripe with Travis was his lack of fluidity on the field, at least from my opinion. I'm anxious to see if that's improved. I know he's also battled injury here at OSU, so here's to a healthy and productive senior year Travis!

All the talk out of camp last year was that Travis would be the next lockdown corner from OSU and was given the #7 Jersey. He seemed to really struggle. Hopefully all that is behind him and he can realize that potential.

CB Howard raises game
Two interceptions in opener reveals OSU is strong on both sides
Updated: September 6, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There are usually two options for attacking cornerbacks.

A quarterback can look to the side that was expected to be dangerous entering the season, where the fastest guy on the Ohio State roster is lined up and developing into one of its top playmakers.

Then there's the other side where there's a player who readily admits he's coming off a disappointing season that didn't even guarantee him a starting job as a senior.

Teammates say Travis Howard has been practicing like he played in the opener when he came up with two turnovers.

But that second choice might not be so appealing now as Central Florida prepares for its trip to Ohio Stadium on Saturday, not with Travis Howard coming off a two-interception outing that has seemingly made it just as risky to throw to his side of the field as Bradley Roby's.

"Bradley and I have the conversation a lot about how good we were supposed to be in the Big Ten last year, but we kind of had some slip-ups," Howard said. "This year, it was kind of a focal point for us to come out and compete and just leave it all on the line.

"I don't think it's anything like he's No. 1 and I'm No. 2. I feel like we're two great corners that compete a lot, and we do have the capabilities of being a dual threat at the corner position."
