Not to mention, he could also potentially add another name to the long list of Cornerback U's history, and open up a whole nother debate in future years.
OSU notebook: Sophomore corner leads depth charge

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Sophomore Travis Howard has been the first to surface in the scramble on the Ohio State depth chart below starting cornerbacks Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence.
"Travis Howard is definitely a guy that we really like, that has come along the most," cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson said. "But after that, I couldn't give you a definite answer."
A glimpse into the pecking order came late last week. With Torrence out because of a slightly strained hamstring, Howard worked with the first unit opposite Chekwa. Junior Donnie Evege and freshman Dominic Clarke are in the mix, as is redshirt freshman Corey Brown.
The way hamstring injuries go, Torrence could be back soon or it could linger. What's important, Johnson said, is that Howard has made noticeable improvement in several areas from the end of last season.
"Just paying attention to detail, and understanding exactly what he's supposed to do and where his help is and where to be," Johnson said. "That's half of it. And just gaining experience - the more you practice, the more experience you gain."
While the competition continues, Johnson said his advice is the same to all of those vying for an upgrade in their seeding. It's having them "understand, 'Hey, we want to play you. Give us a reason to,'" Johnson said.
CB Travis Howard: The only non-starter on this list, Howard is a redshirt sophomore and the clear No. 3 corner behind senior starters Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence. They both battled injuries during he preseason, so it's not unreasonable to expect Howard will start at least a couple games as an injury replacement sometime this season. If that happens, the Buckeyes may not see much of a drop off.
"This is one of the first years I actually put in a lot of work," Howard, who also has battled injuries in the past, said early in camp. "I've doing a lot of extra work and I feel I'm in the best health I've been in."
On the injury front
Even though the score indicated a blowout, some hitting was going on. Four Buckeyes - Devon Torrence, Travis Howard, Donnie Evege and Dorian Bell - needed attention on the field from the trainers. Coach Jim Tressel indicated the one player they were concerned about was Howard, who appeared to suffer a left shoulder injury while covering a kickoff late in the first half.
