CB Sevyn Banks (transfer to LSU)

THE TIME IS NOW FOR SEVYN BANKS

On a defense looking to replace seven of 11 starters from a season ago, including three of the four spots in the secondary, opportunities abound for guys like junior cornerback Sevyn Banks.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound corner is a familiar name to Ohio State fans but through two full seasons, his most significant contributions have come on special teams, most notably a touchdown return of Chris Olave's punt block as a true freshman in the 2018 edition of The Game.

The 33-yard touchdown by Banks came with the Buckeyes leading just 27-19 late in the third quarter, launching what became a 62-39 blowout victory.

Though the play made him famous for a Saturday, Banks didn't see the field in the first eight games of his freshman season before logging special teams snaps in each of the final six. He finished 2018 with one tackle and one huge touchdown.

As a sophomore last season, Banks found his way into the back end of the defensive backfield rotation, seeing snaps in 11 of 14 games.

Logging 170 total defensive plays, Banks saw 21 against Maryland, 33 versus Michigan and a season-high 37 against Rutgers.

The game against the Scarlet Knights also served as his first career defensive start as Ohio State rested Damon Arnette. Banks responded with a pair of tackles.

Shaun Wade will obviously serve as the team's No. 1 corner before heading off to the NFL as a likely first round pick but even in a system typically featuring three cornerbacks partnered with one single-high safety (Josh Proctor), Banks will have to standout among other names including Marcus Williamson, Cameron Brown and Tyreke Johnson.
Finally, Lejond Cavazos and Ryan Watts were early enrollees but the pandemic's impact on spring ball made what was already an uphill climb for early playing time even steeper.

Besides Banks, the Buckeyes need several of these guys to "step up".

Spencer Holbrook: Sevyn Banks will be in position to leave early
Sevyn Banks has the physical tools to be a great member of the Ohio State secondary. Now working under Kerry Coombs, he could be the next Buckeyes cornerback to leave for the NFL. Banks only has one career interception, but that will change this season as he is thrown into the starting rotation. He’s a physical player with a knack for making plays. That will translate onto the Ohio State defense, and it could force him to have a decision to make after the 2020 season.

SEVYN BANKS, CORNERBACK

  • He says Johnson is "doing good," saying he's a smart and intelligent player.
  • "I'm taking it day-by-day." Says he can't wait to get on the field.
  • Being the backup for Okudah and Damon Arnette last year, he says he learned a lot.
  • Right now, they can't tackle, Banks says, but that will come.
  • On the offseason not knowing whether they'd play this fall: "It was just a waiting game, for real."
  • On competing for the starting cornerback spot opposite Shaun Wade: "We take it day by day. We're at Ohio State. We've got to compete."
  • Banks says Williamson has been "dealt a lot of stuff" in his career. "He's a very smart, intelligent person."
  • Growing up, Banks says, he played offense before switching to defense as a junior in high school.
  • On how he wins a starting job: "I don't got to do nothing different. I've just got to do me."
  • Banks says last year halfway through the season, he asked Teradja Mitchell for his No. 7 jersey number and got it this offseason.
  • "You look good. You play good. I've got that mindset."

“I’m taking it day by day right now, but I just can’t wait to get on the field and show out,” Banks said after practice on Tuesday. “I always came in to ball, and that’s never going to change.

“Whoever is here, no matter what is going on, I’m just going to do me.”

SIX PLAYERS THAT MUST STEP INTO SIGNIFICANTLY LARGER ROLES FOR OHIO STATE TO THRIVE IN 2020

SEVYN BANKS - CORNERBACK
At 6-foot-1, 200-pounds, Banks also has the size and range Ohio State looks for in a cornerback. The assumption is that Banks, also a junior, will battle Brown for a starting spot all throughout camp. It will be interesting to see if we find out which will start more than a day before the season opener against Nebraska.

In 170 snaps last season, including 33 versus Michigan, Banks was pretty active with 11 tackles, three pass breakups, 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception. He also certainly has the personality for the position.

No matter who starts, it's a fair expectation that both Brown and Banks will see extensive time this season as Coombs retools the secondary.

What'll be interesting is whether either one could end up playing more slot than anyone is currently anticipating after Coombs spoke about senior Marcus Williamson having the perfect size and skill set to play inside. Maybe foolishly, I guess I'm not quite sold on Williamson have a stranglehold on that spot.

Even if Williamson does, assuming Ohio State still plays a fair amount of single-high safety, there could be room for Brown and Banks on the field together at times.

Bottom line, both Brown and Banks have to play big for Ohio State's secondary to avoid a significant drop off from last year.

SEVYN MIC'D UP. Sevyn Banks was already quickly shooting up my power rankings of most entertaining players, and a mic'd up practice session sure didn't hurt his case.

I pray Kerry Coombs calls him Six the rest of his career. Make him earn the extra number.
