CB Sevyn Banks (transfer to LSU)

Banks, who played four seasons at Ohio State and graduated from the university in December, has one more year of collegiate eligibility after the NCAA gave all players a free year of eligibility in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While Banks left the door open in his statement for a possible return to Ohio State, it’s uncertain whether he would be welcomed back to the Buckeyes, especially considering that they are currently seven scholarships over the 85-man limit.

While Banks started every game at cornerback in 2020 and was expected to be the Buckeyes’ top cornerback entering 2021, he had an injury-plagued final season at Ohio State in which he was in and out of the lineup. With Denzel Burke and Cameron Brown returning for the 2022 season, Banks was unlikely to be a starter if he stayed at Ohio State for his fifth year.

Good luck to Sevyn. I’ve heard some things (not sure if true) that lead me to give him some sympathy about his 2021 season.

I wish the kid success wherever he winds up. His talent is legit….I think he’s got a long NFL future in front of him, but wherever he decides to spend next year is critically important. Burke wasn’t supposed to be our #1 last year….and it was never really the plan…..but some shit went down. Injury related and otherwise.

Here's the story on Sevyn Banks:

It was a wild ride, but thankfully, Austin Ward of Lettermen Row was able to explain at least a little bit about what was going on.

"Sevyn Banks had made his intentions clear that he was going pro all throughout the season. He participated and walked on Senior Day. He was dealing with a significant hip injury – that's what kept him out the last two weeks of the regular season, that's what kept him out of the Rose Bowl. He was still intending to go to the NFL Draft – he received an invitation to the Scouting Combine.

"After he got some feedback about the actual severity of the injury which was compared to Bo Jackson's hip, he said 'well, it may be in the best interest of Sevyn Banks to try to come back.'

"Well, he wasn't enrolled in classes for Ohio State when the semester started. Ohio State, their scholarship situation – they had already moved on because they had been consistently told that Sevyn Banks would not be part of the roster moving forward.

"There was a conversation in February with the Banks family and the Ohio State coaching staff and they laid all that out. You can try to file an appeal and a waiver, because you were not enrolled in classes, to try to get back into Ohio State if you want to do. It's going to be hard – there's no guarantee. Also, his health may not even allow him to play next year.

"So, he entered the transfer portal. To the best of my knowledge, he has not found a place to play. That's going to be the hardest part beacuse nobody knows when he's going to be able to play on that hip."

First, I hope Sevyn makes a complete and full recovery. That was a scary scene.

Second, I think it was appropriate to flag Banks for targeting upon review. It was the definition of lowering the head and leading with the crown, and the controversy that will be stirred up by flagging a player lying motionless will bring greater attention to the severity of these kinds of hits. Anything to add deterrence to this kind of hit, and possibly help to avoid a Shazier-like injury in the future, is a good thing. And it was actually the right call.
