CB Kendall Sheffield (New York Jets)

Second Time Twice as Nice Recruiting Kendall Sheffield

Kendall%20Sheffield%20OSU%20Spring%20Game.jpg

It was a long time coming for Ohio State and junior college transfer Kendall Sheffield.

The Buckeyes offered Sheffield way back in November of 2013. At that time he was nearing the tail end of his junior season at Fort Bend Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas.

A 5-star prep prospect, Sheffield had offers from every major program in the nation, including Ohio State. His first visit to OSU would come nearly a year later, on an official visit to see the Buckeyes host the Cincinnati Bearcats. It was his first of his five official visits.

He would go on to make official visits to USC, Florida State, and Texas A&M. His official visit to Alabama, however, was his final visit, and it came two weeks after he had actually committed to the Crimson Tide.

Sheffield went on to sign with Alabama, but he redshirted as a freshman. It turned out that Nick Saban's program just wasn't for him, so he left and transferred to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas.

The departure to a junior college essentially started the recruiting process for Kendall Sheffield all over again, and that was pretty much all OSU cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs needed to hear.

"I felt like we were really close to getting him the first time," Coombs said this spring. "I was very disappointed that we didn’t. I worked really hard on it and really liked him, really liked his family. He’d been here for a visit, all the things that normally lead to us getting a kid. When he decided to go somewhere else, it was hard for me.

"As soon as I found out that he was becoming available again -- I can’t remember exactly how, if it was internet or whatever -- I reached out immediately. That was somebody I knew had the right skill set for what we do here. I began the process of recruiting him at Blinn right away really hard, and thankfully he chose to become a Buckeye."

The Replacements: How will Ohio State fill void left by LB Raekwon McMillan?

for-ben-defense_lrksau.jpg

Although Ohio State is set to return 15 starters this season, the Buckeyes still have holes to fill. That includes the “quarterback” of Ohio State’s defense for each of the past two seasons, Raekwon McMillan.

A former 5-star prospect, McMillan lived up to lofty expectations over the course of his college career. Last month, the Miami Dolphins selected the second-team All-American in the second round (54th overall) in the NFL draft.

Now, the Buckeyes are tasked with replacing the player who served as the heart and soul of their defense for the past two years. Fortunately for Ohio State, however, Urban Meyer appears to have already found a solution to filling the void that McMillan left.

What exactly are the Buckeyes replacing and how will they do it? Let’s take a look.

The production

After arriving at Ohio State as the top-ranked inside linebacker in the 2014 class, McMillan earned significant playing time throughout the Buckeyes’ run to the first-ever College Football Playoff championship. When Curtis Grant’s eligibility expired, the Georgia native took over as Ohio State’s starting middle linebacker and became a Butkus Award finalist while tallying a team-high 119 tackles, 4 of which came for a loss, and 1.5 sacks.

In 2016, McMillan again led the Buckeyes in tackles, recording 102 in his junior season. Declaring for the NFL draft with a year of eligibility remaining, McMillan finished his college career with 275 tackles, 18 of which came for a loss, 6 sacks, 1 interception and 10 passes defended.

The candidates

Although Ohio State has recruited well at linebacker over the course of Meyer’s tenure, the race to replace McMillan appears to have ended before it started. When the Buckeyes opened spring practice, they had already shifted senior Chris Worley to Mike in an effort to add a veteran presence to the middle of Ohio State’s defense.

Last year’s starting Sam, Worley recorded 69 tackles, 4.5 of which came for a loss, and 4 passes defended in his first season as a starter. His move to the middle will allow fellow veteran linebackers Jerome Baker and Dante Booker to star on the outside.

Like McMillan did in 2014, it’s possible 5-star freshman Baron Browning could earn reps this fall, potentially at the expense of Worley. But after arriving as an early enrollee this past winter, the Texas native missed the bulk of spring practice because of a shoulder injury.

BETTER KNOW A BUCKEYE: KENDALL SHEFFIELD

82697_h.jpg,qitok=XuL4-C1C.pagespeed.ce.Ru5RLds1Ce.jpg

This week's Better Know a Buckeye feature continues with a profile of Kendall Sheffield, a JUCO cornerback prospect from Missouri City, Texas.

KENDALL SHEFFIELD
  • Size: 6-0/183
  • Position: CB
  • Hometown: Missouri City, TX
  • School: Blinn College (JUCO)
  • 247 Composite: ★★★★
  • National Ranking (JUCO) : 3
  • Position Ranking (JUCO): 1 (CB)
  • State Ranking (JUCO): 2 (TX)
  • USA Today First Team All-American (2014)
Sheffield comes to Ohio State with two years of college experience. He was a five-star cornerback in the 2015 recruiting cycle who originally enrolled at Alabama. He left Tuscaloosa after a redshirt year to play at Blinn College with the goal of landing at another Power Five program. He remembered his connections with Ohio State from his first time on the recruiting circuit, which helped the Buckeyes land Sheffield over major attention from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Christian, and USC.

I retell Sheffield's story below. Thereafter, I provide a scouting report of arguably the most polished cornerback on Ohio State's roster who should play immediately because he exhausted his redshirt at Alabama. I close with his JUCO highlight film.

HIS RECRUITMENT
Ohio State's football program already knew who Kendall Sheffield was from his first go-around on the recruiting circuit. Sheffield was a can't-miss five-star cornerback prospect from Texas in the 2015 cycle that drew major offers from the regional powers in the Big XII and SEC. Ohio State offered as well and even hosted Sheffield for an official visit for the Cincinnati game in 2014. However, Sheffield was wooed by the thought of playing for the Crimson Tide, which had made great strides in recruiting Texas after the SEC expanded its footprint to the Lone Star State in 2012. Sheffield chose Alabama a month before 2015 signing day, turning down overtures from Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, and Texas A&M, among many others.

Sheffield failed to crack the two-deep as a true freshman and redshirted his first year on campus. This coincided with Alabama's run to the 2015 national championship. He entered the summer of 2016 still stuck on a loaded depth chart that got deeper with the addition of several talented signees from the No. 1 recruiting class of 2016. Sheffield saw no immediate path to the field for Alabama and decided to leave the program on August 17, 2016. He enrolled at Blinn College, one of the top junior college programs that boasts Cam Newton as arguably its most successful alumnus.

The one-year stint may have taken some of the shine off Sheffield's stellar recruiting rankings but almost all the same programs interested in him for 2015 were interested in him for 2017. He visited USC on Nov. 5 for its game against Oregon. He visited Texas A&M ten days later. Onlookers thought Sheffield would stay in Texas for his second college stint. He had offers from Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Christian toward that end. Texas A&M showed the strongest interest.

However, Sheffield remembered his relationship with Kerry Coombs during his recruitment in the 2015 cycle. He remembered his visit as well. He made another trip in late November, in which Ohio State's coaches worked hard to sell Sheffield on the instant effect he could have on a depth chart that was likely to be depleted by early NFL departures. The pitch worked notwithstanding a strong push from Texas A&M.

PHOTOS: 2017 OHIO STATE FOOTBALL TEAM'S TOP 40 YARD DASH TIMES AND REPS AT 225 POUNDS

If there's one thing Urban Meyer and staff love, it's competition. Given that, it should come as no surprise that the team proudly displays the fastest and strongest players on charts on the walls of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

It should also come as no surprise that some of those measurables are quite eye-popping (we're looking at you, Kendall Sheffield).

Here's a look:

Sheffield may be the fastest guy on the team at least in the 40; however, Campbell is a close 2nd.

I started laughing when I saw this list. Its so tongue on cheek. I remember when Urban put a list like this out while at UF, with hilariously inflated numbers as well. I wouldn't doubt that these guys are fast, but come on...
