CB Jermaine Mathews, Jr. (Official Thread)

Yes young pup looked great out there
They bite early I've heard. Everyone knows I'm a religious recruitnik and all, but I've never even cared about his ranking. This kid just lives to make a big play in a big game, and you couldn't quantify it other than to say he's going to be a great one. Jermaine is on that path and in a big way. Beyond stoked to see him keep improving and start becoming a name all Buckeye fans know on the spot.

When being part of a package and part of the depth equation at Ohio State is a better option than hitting the portal and starting literally anywhere else...
Absolutely and smart too. After this season at least Burke and Hancock are gone, maybe Davison. It's presumably his show as our lock down corner after that.

He beat out 2 2yr players as a true frosh! And when he played, he didn’t look out of place. Hes going to continue the OSU CB lineage

Best 3rd Corner in the Country by a Mile

You often see in young men that they have not yet become articulate, but they have an intelligence that the listener has to work to hear. Jermaine is one of those guys. Underneath the way he expresses himself, he has, not just intelligence, but a wisdom beyond his years. Pay attention and you'll catch it. Yes, he says "you feel me" in more sentences than not. Yes, his body language, diction, grammar, etc could use work. But he's young and it is likely that he not only hasn't been taught such things; he likely hasn't even been (successfully) taught the importance of such things. He has everything it takes to become a uniquely skilled communicator.

The sky is the limit for this young man. Not just in football, but in life.

TIM WALTON SAYS JERMAINE MATHEWS JR. PROVIDES AN “IT FACTOR” IN OHIO STATE'S SECONDARY

146256_h.jpg

There aren’t many teams Jermaine Mathews Jr. would be a backup on.

It might be just one.

Ohio State’s sophomore cornerback – a composite top-60 prospect out of high school –made an impact when called upon as a freshman. He did an immaculate job filling in for Denzel Burke when the Buckeyes’ star corner went down with a lower-body injury last year, collecting three tackles with a pass breakup to help his defense stuff No. 7 Penn State in a 20-12 win for OSU on Oct. 21.

Now entering his second season, he’s taking a second-year leap.
“He’s taken a great step forward,” cornerback coach Tim Walton said. “He’s the next guy up, man. He’s been extremely important in the growth of our secondary because now we’ve worked him inside some, he’s played outside at both corner spots. He’s got that ‘it’ factor, you know what I mean? So we look at what he brings, the energy, the competitiveness, we’ve gotta build off last year and expand the role for him.”

For me, there are just some dudes I like from the jump, and Mathews is certainly one. I should clarify, in this case "like" should be understood in the man crush sense. I think he's going to make it to the next level and believe he'll excel there too. Kid has it.
He bit as a pup and I was confident he would following his recruitment. I'm not always right on these things, but I had the utmost confidence in JMath playing early at a high level (thread is littered with my posts to that effect). Article above is right, he would be a feature CB on most teams and he will be ours next season imo. But for now he will play often and is tremendous depth.
