I was screaming for it, Mathews needed put in because whether Burke was just having a bad night or has just regressed. And as you said, maybe Burke comes back in after some rest and refocus. But to me that is just atrocious not to adjust and play a very talented and proven player over a guy that was getting exposed left and right. Maybe they look at film and start Mathews next week, or at least give him ample playing time, but it won't fix what happened last night.I'm not sure if it was the scheme or the player, but Burke was definitely getting pushed past his limits last night. A series after halftime might well have given Burke time to recover a bit.
Really don't remember how many plays Jermaine got. Was too busy watching Burke get torched. That being said, hard to put in someone when Burke has done so much. And I'd bet vcash that he didn't want to come out either. Remember, the coaches are coaching for their jobs, as well as the players are playing for NFL contracts. If Burke was the best we've got, still would be hard to pull him in favor of a more untested DB. Careers have been lost over less.
Unless there is some off the field issue or issues in practice, there is no excuse for this under the circumstances. Burke is probably the better player most days, but he certainly was not that night. I would even submit that Mathews should have been playing some even if Burke was killing it to keep guys fresh and because he is that good. The answer is ZERO
