CB Jermaine Mathews, Jr. (National Champion)

Ohio State star Jermaine Mathews Jr. sent a firm message to the SEC after the Buckeyes took care of the Texas Longhorns

The Ohio State star had to do some talking after the big win.

Jermaine Mathews Jr. made headlines again after the Buckeyes’ win over Texas with a message to the SEC

Ohio State held the Longhorns scoreless until the fourth quarter in a 14-7 victory. Dating back to last season, the Buckeyes are now 3-0 against the SEC, and that has players talking. While jogging off the field after the game, Mathews was asked about the SEC. His response was clear:

“We run that, we run that,” Mathews said. The Ohio State cornerback forced the only turnover in the game when he intercepted a pass from Arch Manning.

This isn’t the first time Mathews has spoken out about the SEC. Last season, when Tennessee came into Columbus with plenty of hype, Ohio State blew out the Volunteers, and Mathews again declared that the Buckeyes ran the SEC.

The rivalry between the Big Ten and SEC has only grown in recent years, fueled by debates and playoff matchups between the two conferences. With the Big Ten claiming the last two national championships, and Ohio State looking like a contender once again, the Buckeyes are making it clear—they expect to stay in that conversation.

Ohio State's defense dominated Texas and Pro Football Focus took notice of the Buckeyes on that side of the ball.

Following Ohio State's season-opening win over No. 1 Texas, many people were impressed with the performance of the Buckeyes' defensive players and formed opinions on how Ohio State's players performed. One such set of opinions comes from Pro Football Focus, who grades every player after every game based on how they perform on a snap-to-snap basis.
PFF's Grading Scale
ELITE GOOD ABOVE AVG. AVG. BELOW AVG. POOR VERY POOR
90-100 80-89 70-79 60-69 50-59 40-49 Below 40
We compiled the PFF grades for every Buckeye who played on either offense or defense in the season opener and highlight the three highest-graded players – all of whom were on the defensive side of the ball – who played at least 10 snaps against the Longhorns.

3. CB Jermaine Mathews Jr. (78.0)

Mathews earned Ohio State's highest grade from PFF in pass coverage (84.4). The junior finished the opener with three tackles and the game's only interception as well as an additional pass deflection that was nearly picked off by Sonny Styles.
