They are coached that - but when the WR has a step on you, your first act is to recover....hard thing for even the most seasoned vet, let alone a young DB. I don't think there is a worse feeling on the field than being a DB and knowing you got beat.....not that I would ever know....a lot... :)

It's been gone over by Spielman. They are taught to play the receivers hands and punch up through them to dislodge the ball.

IIRC, I think that technique is specifically for back shoulder passes.

I don't think it's limited to that. From what I've read this is the commonly taught technique for both collegiate and pro defensive backs.

The Buckeyes are one of the top defenses in the US against the pass. Something is being done right.

Eli turned briefly to find the ball. He then punched at the ball and ripped out the other hand. Saeed just made a phenomenal 1 handed catch.
