Ohio will be key again for MSU
Posted: Feb. 27, 2010
By MATT DORSEY

Since being hired at Michigan State back in November of 2006, Mark Dantonio has made recruiting the state of Ohio a top priority.

Other coaches like John L. Smith and Nick Saban also recruited there, but Dantonio has taken it to another level. Nearly 30 percent of the players signed by Michigan State since Dantonio's arrival played their high school ball in Ohio. That percentage is higher than any other Big Ten school -- except for Ohio State, of course.

Michigan State has recently extended scholarships offers to several Ohio players they are prioritizing for the class of 2011.

Mark Givler, who covers recruiting for OhioVarsity.com, recently stated that the players that Dantonio has offered from the Buckeye State are "impressive" and he expects Michigan State to sign "another strong group from Ohio."

Here's a look at a few of his preseason top-ranked players that Michigan State is currently pursuing:

No. 1: DB Doran Grant of Akron Saint Vincent-Saint Mary

The top-ranked player in Ohio has strong Spartan ties. His father, Ted Jones, was an All-Big Ten wide receiver for Michigan State back in the 1980s. Michigan State has had Grant on campus multiple times and he will be one of top recruits in the nation.

ESPN RISE
Updated: March 5, 2010

The race for the nation's top SPARQ Rating and a berth at the first-ever SPARQ Rating National Championship this summer in Oregon continues as the 2010 Nike Football Combine rolls through Ohio and Eastern Pennsylvania this weekend. Some of the top talent in both of these tradition-rich states will be present and ESPN RISE will spotlights the top prospects expected to attend below.

Over the next week, ESPN RISE will have several items pertaining to the NIKE Ohio and Philadelphia Combines. For complete coverage of the event be sure to check ESPN RISE daily.

Ohio (Massillon Indoor complex)

Doran Grant - St. Vincents-St. Mary's (Akron, Ohio) DB
Grant could very easily be the one of the top prospects in Ohio and top defensive backs in the nation, already holding over 20 offers. Grant is a veteran of the Nike Combine, having attended each of the past three years and posting 109.17 SPARQ Rating as a junior, so he should be squarely in the mix for a spot at the SPARQ Rating National Championship this summer. A few schools to offer include Georgia, Michigan, USC, Cal and Ohio State.

Grant leads the way as 13 top 100 in Ohio
By Brian Stumpf, Updated: March 7, 2010, 9:58 AM ET

...
After putting up a 109.17 SPARQ Rating a year ago at the Pittsburgh Nike Combine, Grant didn't seem to leave himself much room to improve, but he blew away all expectations.

Grant's day included a 4.56 SPARQ digitally-timed 40-yard dash, combine-bests 3.97 in the shuttle and 41.2 inches in the vertical, as well as a 37-5 foot power ball throw, as he bested every single one of his marks from a year ago.

A Division III Second Team All-State pick last fall, Grant has vaulted himself into a near-certain berth in this summer's first annual SPARQ Rating National Championship to be held in Beaverton (Ore.) at the Nike World Headquarters. The event will feature 20 of the top SPARQ-rated athletes from this spring's combine tour.

BigDog, during your conversation, did you get any sense as to whether he's leaning OSU or MSU?

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if Miami eventually became the biggest threat to OSU, whom it seemed like he was hedging towards. I'm writing up the interview and I'll post the link here later that gets a little more in-depth on that.

OSU has everything he's looking for, I'm not too worried.

Rivals $ - Grant talks about big weekend
Brian Snow of BuckeyeGrove.com, March 8, 2010

Surprised even himself with his numbers at the Massillon combine since he hasn't really been training... Grant will be busy thru the Summer with a visit to Georgia Tech, the 5star academy at MSU, Nike camp at PSU, & the Raw Talent tour... He also wants to visit OSU some time in there... Taking his time to make the right decision... No leader, no timetable...

Doran Grant - St. Vincent's-St. Mary's (Akron, Ohio) DB
Grant has been attending the Nike Combines each year of his high school career and every year has improved on his numbers. This year, Grant wowed everyone by posting a 124.50 SPARQ Rating with combine best in the vertical (41.2) and shuttle (3.97). With offers from around the country, Grant is fast becoming not only the top player in the state but is making claims to possibly being one of the best players in the country. As of now his 124.50 rating is tops in the country and will be very tough to beat. He has offers from USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU and Penn State plus many others.
