Ohio State football: Doran Grant soaks up valuable lessons from Bradley Roby
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday
October 23, 2013
JONATHAN QUILTER | DISPATCH
Ohio State cornerback Doran Grant, right, made a key interception against Northwestern while covering receiver Rashad Lawrence on Oct. 5.
Even though Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby might not be having the season on the field he expected, including his ejection Saturday for targeting a defenseless Iowa receiver, his impact in that game still could be seen through the player he is mentoring, fellow cornerback Doran Grant.
Grant had an aggressive pass breakup on a third-quarter third down and later nearly had an interception, only to have his hands betray him. Such awareness, such aggressiveness — Ohio State’s other starting cornerback is beginning to show a little swagger in his junior season, his first as a regular.
“You’ve got to have that, and that’s one of the things I learned from Roby,” Grant said. “You’ve got to have that to play the game, especially at my level.”
People are taking shots at Ohio State’s pass defense, Roby in particular, for its inconsistent play. But heading into a Big Ten game on Saturday night against Penn State at Ohio Stadium, critics also can see that Grant — usually found on the wide side of the secondary — is playing with much more confidence compared with the start of the season.
“He’s one of those guys a year ago who had that bad name attached to him, which was the word ‘potential,’ ” coach Urban Meyer said. “This year, that potential has turned into ability in the way he’s playing. He’s playing very well.”

Like LeBron, Ohio State's Doran Grant another Akron native who says, 'I'm not supposed to be here'

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Doran Grant recognized the pattern from game film he had watched earlier in the week. He identified the quarterback's progressions, the receiver's route and everything else unfolding at Ryan Field.
And so Grant gambled, jumped in front and came away with a crucial fourth-quarter interception.
He wasn't supposed to be there. Not in front of the receiver. And certainly not in Evanston, Ill., forcing a critical turnover for the nation's fourth-ranked team against a Big Ten foe. He's just a kid from Akron, Ohio.
