CB Doran Grant (Official Thread)

Scout $ - Grant "Ready to Lead"

6/1

By The Bank....Was shocked about Tressel resigning, but remains a Buckeye. Says he feels like a leader of the 2011 class & has talked to several 2011 commits including Devin Smith, Curtis Grant, Evan Spencer & Antonio Underwood over the past few days. Says he feels that everyone will report on June 19th and doesn't expect anyone to back out on being a Buckeye.

GREAT article from a GREAT kid. Easily will become a favorite of many fans.

The St. Vincent-St. Mary 4x100 relay team (from left, Mark Murphy, Parris Campbell, Sae'Von Fitzgerald and Doran Grant) captured the event (42.42) and helped lead the Irish to a state track title.

Grant received plaudits from Lancianese for his unselfish attitude after taking second in the 110 hurdles (14.22). The defending state hurdle champion, Grant lost by .03 to Josh Thompson (14.19) of Steubenville.

Rather than pout, Grant pulled it together and gave a supreme effort in the 4x1 relay as the Irish lowered their 43.13 prelim time to 42.42 in winning the finals.

?My team, we?ve been talking about it all season,? Grant said. ?Each meet we?ve been getting faster and faster.?

A future Ohio State football player, after a highly publicized recruiting battle for his services, Grant took in stride being a reserve for St. V-M?s state championship basketball team. Few athletes of his caliber would have accepted his role on the team.

?He still had enough mental fortitude to know he had to be ready for the 4x1 relay and all he was interested in was his teammates,? Lancianese said.

Doran Grant, an Ohio State football recruit, finished second in the 110-meter hurdles, an event he won at the meet last year.

''I had a cleaner race today,'' Grant said. ''[Steubenville senior] Josh Thompson pulled it out in the end. It was a good run overall. I ran better than I did [Friday], but I didn't come out on top.''

He hardly seemed disappointed and he was part of the winning 400 relay team that also included 13-year-old Parris Campbell, Sae'Von Fitzgerald and Indiana University recruit Mark Murphy.

I'm going to guess, but probably not even close. TG2 was out of this world in the 110. Like almost a shoe-in to make the national team if had chosen good. His senior year, he ran a national high school record time for the race, with the wind being just over the legal limit.

Edit: Just looked it up, Doran ran a 14.22 yesterday. TG2 ran a 13.4 as a senior - 13.26 in the prelims with the illegal wind.

Not a slam on Grant at all. I'd bet money that we never see OSU recruit a hurdler on TG2's level in our lifetime.

STVM's Grant is SportsInk.com Male Athlete of the Year

Doran Grant, who competed in football, basketball and track at St. Vincent-St. Mary, being part of two state championship teams, is the SportsInk.com Male Athlete of the Year.

AKRON, Ohio ? There?s nothing ordinary ? in any way, shape and form -- about Doran Grant.

No matter how you look at it, he stands out. You could try to find another like him, and although it?s not impossible, it would take a long time for you to do it.

And that is why he has been selected as the SportsInk.com Male Athlete of the Year for the 2010-11 school year. He succeeds Twinsburg?s Waquiem Comar, who, as a senior, won the award in 2009-10 during the website?s first year of existence.

Grant, who has just graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary, was a three-sport athlete for the Fighting Irish. That, in itself, stands out in a day and age when, because of the focus by athletes on just one sport, hoping to develop their skills to the point that a college scholarship awaits them someday, playing three sports in a single year is quickly going the way of set shots, 160-pound pulling guards and track events measured in yards, not meters.

And to play three sports per year all four years in high school? Now, that may be akin to driving a horse and buggy.

But that?s Doran Grant.

Grant?s main sport is football. One of the best players in Ohio last season ? and one of the most highly-recruited ? the 5-foot-11, 180-pounder was rated the No. 1 cornerback in the country by Rivals.com. But his versatility allowed him to also man three other positions as well in quarterback, running back and wide receiver, along with returning kicks and punts, making him the most multi-faceted player anytime he stepped onto the field for the Irish.

Grant had two interceptions and 24 tackles during the 2010 regular season, caught 35 passes for 413 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for 173 yards and four scores on 30 carries on the way to being named All-Ohio for the second straight year. The Irish made the Division III state playoffs, advancing to the second round before losing to finish 7-5.

As the 102d-best overall college football prospect in the country, Doran Grant, a cornerback from Akron, Ohio, takes pleasure in humming Michigan's fight song when he saunters by his future rivals.

"They just look at me and laugh," said Grant, a member of Team Ohio here to play against Team Pennsylvania in Saturday's Big 33 high school all-star football game at HersheyPark Stadium.

The hooting, hollering, and teasing from Team Ohio practicing this week floated all the way over to the neighboring field, where Team Pennsylvania practiced.

The Ohioans chalk up the trash talk to team camaraderie.

On a smaller scale, Grant - who got his high ranking from Rivals.com - already has become good friends with the other six players heading to Ohio State this fall.

Grant will officially begin his Buckeyes career on Sunday, when he and the other recruits move onto the Ohio State campus.

But the man responsible for getting him to Columbus won't be his coach.

Many of the future Buckeyes, who were part of Jim Tressel's last recruiting class at Ohio State, had nothing but good things to say about their almost-head coach on Wednesday.

When he started recruiting Grant, Tressel called the talented cornerback almost once a week. As expected, their conversations included what Grant had to do to prepare himself to play right away.

But Tressel was also one of the few coaches to avoid putting any pressure on Grant during the recruiting process. And he talked to the kid about life.

Finish strong in the classroom. Stay in the weight room. Keep running. Stay in the best football shape you can.

"It's still the Ohio State Buckeyes," Grant said. "I've still got my family, which is my recruiting class, my brothers on the team. [We're] still ready to play."

What ever happened to Doran? Thought he'd be in the mix at some point this year.

He played on a lot of special teams and was 2nd on the depth chart at right CB. He will have to fight to beat out Robey or Howard who will both be back next year but with a new staff who knows what will happen. Happy Birthday Doran by the way!
