CB Donnie Evege (official thread)

Wayne grad Evege the face of OSU special teams play

COLUMBUS ? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For New Mexico State and especially its kick returners, the sight of Donnie Evege roaring down the field for Ohio State ? with his sprinter?s speed, his long dark hair rippling out the back of his helmet, that kamikaze pilot?s singular intent ? had to be a dreaded one.

But up in the Ohio Stadium stands Saturday, Oct. 31 ? from the vantage point of Donnie Sr., and his wife Chrissy, parents of the former Wayne High School star ? the whole thing looked quite divine.

?Any time your child goes through something like he did the past two years, your heart goes out to them,? Donnie Sr. said. ?To see him running around full speed and helping his team out there now is exciting.?

And Evege did help the Bucks in their 45-0 dismantling of New Mexico State. The redshirt sophomore?s three tackles ? tied for second most by a Bucks player ? all ended Aggie kick returns with a bruising exclamation point.

As the season has progressed, Evege ? whose dad was a Central State baseball player and whose mom won a state basketball crown as an Akron prep player ? has become the face of OSU special teams play.

Two years ago ? as the Bucks were preparing for their game at Penn State, same as this week ? Evege was a redshirt freshman on the scout team. Attempting to smother an A.J. Trapasso punt in practice, he took the full brunt of the kicker?s leg just beneath his right knee.

He suffered a meniscus injury that required surgery, put him in a hip-to-ankle brace and cost him the rest of the 2007 season and all of last year, too.

?It can be tough ? realizing life goes on for the other guys and you?re injured and kind of dealing with the unknown by yourself,? said Donnie Sr. ?At least he had some things to keep him occupied.?

Evege, you see, tackles life like he does football.

After graduating early from Wayne, he completed a program at Hondros College in Dayton that got him eligible to take the state licensing test to become a real estate agent.

At OSU, where he carries a 3.1 grade-point average, he was chosen to represent all Buckeye athletes at the National Student-Athlete Development Conference in Orlando, Fla. He?s also heavily involved in the OSU chapter of Uplifting Athletes.

In his spare time, he said he and a couple of his teammates have been playing the stock market and ?oh yeah, we?ve done real good.?

I guess it was pretty easy to forget about him this year when he didn't get on the field much. I'd like to see him out there too making plays. Hopefully he didn't get pushed out with Howard (or Corey Brown) probably taking over at the Nickel, and Torrence and Chekwa starting.

Donnie Evege, playing with the first team in place of the injured returning starting cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, had a couple of standout plays during the more lively sessions, including a pick six of quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the right flat. Evege, whose first couple of years were marked by nagging injuries, is flashing the form most expected of him from the start and might be working his way into the nickel defense consideration at the least.

Hoot and holler too close to call (Blogging the Buckeyes)

Despite what the media seem to believe; the Big 10 has several teams that have been running the spread for years.

Whether they run the spread to pass, or whether they use it to run the ball; it is exciting to hear that the Buckeyes seem to have 3 corners with legit cover skills. Being able to cover all of a teams receivers 1-1 can do as much for the run game as it does for the pass defense.

Of course, it's always great to hear about a guy who has been frustrated by injuries for years finally making his name (and his game) heard.

Playing special teams, Evege was hurt trying to tackle OU?s Dallas Brown on a kick return. Caroming toward the ground, Evege put out his left arm to break the fall. He lay there in obvious pain and eventually was helped into the dressing room with a towel over his elbow.

OSU made no announcement on his status, but Donnie Sr. said afterwards that his son had dislocated his elbow: ?He was in intense pain coming off the field. ... He?ll learn more about it in a couple of days, but they were talking about him missing several weeks.?

Having dislocated my elbow multiple times, it's a BAD rehab if the joint didn't "re-locate" on its own. I couldn't tell if it did or if the trainers did it on the field. If the ligaments within his elbow were damaged and he's looking at surgery, he'll be done for the year.

If the dislocation didn't cause any true damage (meaning ligament or tissue tears or ruptures), given that Ohio State has the very best rehab and physical therapy possible, maybe the max would be 5-6 weeks.

I have a special place in my heart for Dayton area Buckeyes, especially DBs (for some reason). I hope that Donnie takes this setback head-on and uses his recovery time to recuperate, re-evaluate, and reinvigorate his desire to become a starter at OSU. From what I've seen of him on the field (mostly special teams), he seems like a talented kid with a lot of heart. Probably could have been regular player at many schools, but OSU is another animal. Maybe this can be one of those instances where a disappointment becomes a blessing. Get well soon, Donnie!
