CB Dionte Allen (Official Thread)

No. Sits out his junior (2010) year, then becomes a senior in 2011.

The rule is, generally you have 5 years in which to play 4. Additional years are occasionally available in the event of injury.

I thought the year a student sits out due to a transfer is not counted towards the four years of eligibility?

Dionte using the redshirt already is why I believe he only has one year of eligibility if he transfers to another FBS 1a or (whatever it's called) school.
For example, Justin Boren played 2 years at Michigan without a redshirt, then sat out a year here and is entering his second year on the field. Like Max said, you have 5 years to use four years of eligibility. Dionte was at FSU for the 07, 08, and 09 seasons. That's three years. Now he has a year to sit and one to play, using his entire 5 years.

Is that rule still around for college graduates being able to transfer without penalty? I remember a Florida DB in 2006 who transferred from Utah with no penalty.

Changed it. Ryan Smith was just one of those lucky breaks we had in 2006.

What about Masoli?

It doesn't count against the 4 years of eligibility. It does, however, count against the five years the player has in which to play the maximum of four. Five years for Dionte: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.

The possibility of Allen getting a 6th year of eligibility are not likely (think Ben Mauk) but, there was a recent NCAA basketball exception to completing 4 years of eligibility within the 5 year window.

Miami's Thomas given 6th year of Eligibility

CBSSports.com wire reports
Aug. 18, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Miami forward Adrian Thomas has been given a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA.
Thomas had season-ending injuries early in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, playing a total of eight games during those years.

Allen is expected

Tressel could not comment on reports that defensive back Dionte Allen of Florida State is about to transfer to OSU. But sources told The Dispatch that Allen, from Orchard Lake, Mich., could sign scholarship papers as soon as Wednesday.

Allen, from the same high school that produced current Buckeyes players Aaron Gant and Taurian Washington, spent a redshirt season in 2007 before getting limited minutes the next two seasons. He will have to sit out this year because of NCAA transfer rules, which would leave him with one season of eligibility with the Buckeyes.
