We Had to Put Him on the Field
Coach Elmer Schuetz from Canton South talks about the best player that he’s had on his team in 35 years, Devon Torrence. What Coach Jim Bollman had to say when he stopped in and where the Buckeyes are looking to play him.
By Steve Patterson
What are Devon's best attributes as a football player?
“His feet. I think he's a great athlete. He's an outstanding baseball player and an outstanding football player. He started for us ever since his freshman year, from the first game on. I just remember seeing him playing on Tuesdays and thinking, 'We have to put him on the field.' It wasn't hard to figure that one out. He's a talent and he just keeps getting better and better. And the other thing, Devon is a great kid. He's a hard worker and very conscience and he wants to be a good athlete. He works hard at it, he really does.”
Was there a specific game or period of games where it became clear just how special Devon is?
“He's best game of the season was probably the last 2 games when we beat West Branch and we beat Carrollton High School. Against Carrollton it was a goal line situation and he completely turned a tight game around were we won it by 2 or 3 touchdowns. There was a 3rd and about 1 foot to go for a touchdown, we were up by about 1 point and he came through and hit this kid for about a 4 yard lose. He hit the kid; the kid got up and fell backwards. It was really a highlight film. He had a great against them defensively and had a great game against West Branch both defensively and offensively.”
Devon will play running back and cornerback this coming season?
“He started out as a running back for us played corner and the last year it's been running back and we moved him to safety cause he could cover more field. He could be a corner or he could be a safety. He could be a running back; he could be a wide receiver. Being a center fielder in baseball, he has a great set of hands. Right now he's about 6'1' 190 lbs. Jim Bollman was in and saw him and said, 'Man he's really really grown since his sophomore year.' He's just been maturing naturally.”
When Coach Bollman came in what position was he mostly talking about?
“I talked to Jim and he said that they are looking at him as mostly an athlete. He's a kid that could be a running back, although I know they have Chris Wells coming in. He could be a wide receiver. But I think the area that they are most looking at would be defensive back. We believe in putting our athletes on the field so he returns kicks and he returns punts. He can do all that stuff too. Just put him on the field as much as you can and good things happen.”
