He is creeping up to the Mendoza average. Basically Devon Torrence has the best paying summer job for a college kid.

Agreed. A friend of mine works for a MLB team. He scouted Torrence and said he has talent but is extremely raw. I'm glad with James Scott out that DT is athletic enough to move to CB.

Ahh, this is what I love...

I was very dissapointed when he saw time with the wide receivers, because I really feel he could be an elite cornerback. He's long and very fast.

BASEBALL AND TORRENCE Torrence is spending the first part of training camp at cornerback and learning more defense. He knows the offense and is familiar at wide receiver, where he played last year. Head Coach Jim Tressel is experimenting in possibly playing Torrence both ways because of his athleticism. Torrence spent much of the spring and summer playing minor league baseball in the Astors organization for Greenville. He hit .151 in 34 games.

We think Devon is coming along and he needs to be in our two-deep and do it well. He needs to be on our special teams. He's a very explosive guy. That's why we kind of took the wide receiver stuff off his plate so he could really get good on defense and special teams, but it will be primarily as a corner. We know they have a great tight end, so I don't know that it's going to be a spread that's simply a line up and throw it all over because that tight end, Bush, of theirs is special, so they're going to still do some conventional tight end type things so we may be in some base, may be in some nickel and some dime.

Agreed. He has been a very solid special teams performer--he deserves some props.

Torrence has kind of gotten lost in the shuffle so far--which boggles my mind in light of how good of an athlete this guy supposedly is. Is it baseball that is holding him back from his football potential?

I would like to see him at KR.

DEVON LOOKS GOOD Canton South graduate Devon Torrence, who split time at wide receiver and defensive back last spring and fall, seems to have a good handle on a starting cornerback position. Torrence looked good against the pass Thursday and deflected a Terrelle Pryor bomb intended for DeVier Posey inside the 5. Ohio State is looking for a cornerback to replace Malcolm Jenkins.

Torrence to specialize?
Tressel said Torrence will decide in May whether he will continue his baseball career. Torrence was drafted in the 16th round by the Houston Astros in 2007 and has played partial seasons in 2007 and 2008 with class-A Greeneville, Tenn.

He has struggled at baseball, hitting a combined .150 over his two seasons, with 101 strikeouts in 206 at bats.

The question now is, considering he is competing to start, can he afford to miss summer football drills to chase his baseball dream?

"It's up to him -- if he'd like to (play baseball), that's great, that was our agreement," Tressel said.

Earlier, Tressel joked, "I told him if he hits .125 again, they're not going to want him to play."
