CB Devon Torrence (official thread)

OSU notebook: Freshman shifts gears quickly

Devon Torrence was part of the big photo when Ohio State posed in Ohio Stadium yesterday, but he's also keeping pro baseball in the picture.

Torrence, a freshman defensive back/receiver from Canton, spent almost two months this summer playing for the Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros after Houston drafted him in June. On Saturday, he traveled to Columbus and flipped the switch for football. He's working out at cornerback.

"I am just going to work out with baseball in the offseason," he said.

Baseball is no passing fancy, Torrence said, even though he struck out in five of his first six at-bats with Greeneville.

"It probably was more (strikeouts) than that," he said. "It was an adjustment I had to make. The pitching was a lot harder, and just being on my own for the first time was different.

"But I am definitely going to go back next year and give it a shot and see what happens. They told me I was probably one of the best players there because they saw all the tools I had and saw some things they could work with."

Drafted as a switch-hitting outfielder, he played center field and appeared in 30 games. Though he never hit his stride batting, with a .149 average while striking out 48 times in 87 at-bats, he left a few marks. As of yesterday, he was still by far the team leader in walks with 23, which helped him to an on-base percentage of .330, best on the team.

In reference to the article above, he may have had quite a few K's, but he was playing in the Appalachian League in the minors. This is a high level rookie league that is loaded primarily with guys that have spent 2 or 3 years playing college ball already. DT did really well for someone who just just finished up on a high school baseball field.

Is Devon almost a guaranteed red shirt?

Given that incoming freshman Dane, And Taurian have gotten rave reviews at WR already, on top of a solid top 4 not to mention Dukes, I would think that would be the plan? if he can get on the field this year he's gonna be truly special.

Devon is a different WR than those two...he is lightning in a bottle.

I'll wait for Dukes to produce on the field before counting on him.

Move makes sense considering the number of dbs that are sophmore or younger in the secondary. His film on scouting ohio from last year shows a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball as he can take a little slip screen and be gone.

OSU FOOTBALL
Torrence is turning double play

Columbus- Even after a minor-league baseball game in Greenville, Tenn., this summer, Devon Torrence couldn't escape his football calling in Ohio.
When a fan approached the two-sport athlete for an autograph at a restaurant, it was to sign an Ohio State cap.
Buckeyes fans might be smart to enjoy the freshman defensive back while they can.

Torrence steps in for injured receiver Small
Wednesday, August 15, 2007Doug LesmerisesPlain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- It's Ohio State sophomore and Glenville grad Ray Small who's supposed to elicit comparisons to his receiving mentor, Ted Ginn Jr. But after Small sprained his ankle in practice Satur day, it's fresh man Devon Torrence who is following in Ginn's foot steps.

Like Ginn and Anthony Gonzalez be fore him, Tor rence signed with the Buckeyes as a defensive back but quickly has been shifted to wide receiver. Torrence, who missed summer football workouts while playing minor league baseball, made the move Monday.

He did so because Small, holding down the job as OSU's third wideout, will miss practice at least for a while. Offensive coordinator Jim Bollman wouldn't get specific Tuesday, but said, "I think we'll be conservative bringing that back. But it's not like he's going to miss half the year or anything like that." Asked if Small might sit out the opener against Youngstown State 17 days from now, Bollman said, "I don't know yet, we'll see how it goes."

While untested veterans Albert Dukes and Devon Lyons still figure into the receiving mix, Bollman indicated freshmen Taurian Washington, Dane Sanzenbacher and Torrence would have a chance to earn some playing time.

OSU football notebook: Torrence makes switch from corner to flanker

The Columbus Dispatch

When Ohio State coach Jim Tressel introduced the 2007 recruiting class in February, he said versatility was a strength of a group chock full of "athletes." Devon Torrence became an example of that this week.

Torrence, who played baseball in the Houston Astros organization this summer, started camp as a cornerback. But after projected starting flanker Ray Small suffered a high ankle sprain Saturday, the coaches moved Torrence to compete for that spot with fellow freshmen Taurian Washington and Dane Sanzenbacher.

"I think some of the young guys are going to have some opportunities to be factors," offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said yesterday. "Those guys are doing a good job."

He said he doesn't expect Small, a sophomore working in the spot vacated by Ted Ginn Jr., to be out for long, but the three freshmen exhibit the primary prerequisite for the position.

"All three of those guys really run well, which we knew coming in," Bollman said. "When you see them in their pads, they carry their pads well. They will do a good job."

As far as running down long passes, Torrence shouldn't be out of his element. He excelled defensively as a center fielder for the Astros' rookie team in Greeneville, Tenn., the previous two months.
