COLUMBUS

Through the heat, diesel fumes, long bus rides and empty stands, Devon Torrence made his way to Ohio State. He arrived after a month of minor league baseball, a fat six-figure signing bonus and a head spinning on his shoulders.

Torrence was drafted by the Houston Astros, and, after a tricky negotiation, worked himself a deal that allows him to play baseball in the summer and return to the Buckeye football team in August. It is the best of both worlds for the 18-year-old Canton South High School graduate.

Football follows pro baseball debut Stark's two-sport star switches to receiver slot for first season at OSU

COLUMBUS: Devon Torrence conceded that he wasn't prepared for his arrival in the minor leagues in June.
He had just turned 18 and was the youngest player on a rookie-league team made up mostly of 23-year-olds. He was using a wooden bat for the first time. He was playing before good crowds for the Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros, and fans were asking for his autograph.
Then there was the constant razzing he received as a member of the Ohio State University football team.
''I was taking heat every day,'' he said. ''We'd be doing stretches, and they'd be saying, 'Go, Michigan' and things like that.''

I really like the upside that Devon possesses...He shows great escapability with the ball in his hands and once he gets the ins and outs of the position he could really take off...

A la Anthony Gonzales perhaps? Same situation, they both came in as DBs and switched to receiver... it should be interesting to watch.

I fell in love with Devon's skills on the offensive side of the ball when I saw his videos last year as a recruit. I thought he may have had a future at RB, before we brought in Saine and Herron. I love his speed and quickness after the catch. With Devon, in addition to Small, Saine and Thomas next year as guys thta can play the slot, run reverses, trick plays, catch a screen and score a TD, we have some amazing skill players. I can't wait to see hims deveolp into a complete player and become a guy that opposing defenses must gamplen to stop.

Devon Torrence remains interested in playing baseball for a Houston Astros farm team and football for Ohio State, but he might be getting concerned that he's missing a lot of baseball without seeing a lot of playing time as an OSU receiver.

A dual role for Buckeyes' Torrence?
Canton South grad may play 'D'

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Things are changing this spring at Ohio State. So are the players, positions and some numbers.

Canton South graduate Devon Torrence, who played sparingly at wide receiver and on special teams as a true freshman last year, will get some work at cornerback this spring. Head Coach Jim Tressel said Torrence could develop into a two-way player similar to Chris Gamble. Tressel estimated that Torrence would play about 10 percent of the time at cornerback this spring.

"Starting out with just one concept, like we did with Chris Gamble, and if he can handle that concept without it affecting his offense, then you give him another one and add another thing to his plate," Tressel said. "Devon is such an explosive athlete and he loves being busy. If you walk through the locker room, he's got a big plastic can of baseballs. He's out there whenever he gets a chance hitting."

Torrence is still sharing time with the Astros organization, but only during the summer when OSU football is off.

Torrence gears up for summer job
Speedster eager for second season in professional baseball

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Joe Speed doesn't know when Devon Torrence has his last exam next week, but he knows where his client will be two hours after he's finished:

"On a flight to Kissimmee, Fla.," Speed said.

That's where the Houston Astros have their training facility.

Speed is Torrence's baseball agent. Despite the fact that Torrence had signed to play football for Ohio State, the Astros drafted him last June. The NCAA allows a player to have an agent and play professionally in one sport while remaining amateur in another.

Torrence played for the class-A team in Greenville, Tenn., last summer before reporting to the Buckeyes for preseason camp. And he is eager to pull double duty again.

"Right now, he's champing at the bit" to play baseball, Speed said. "We talk every day about baseball. That's all he's thinking about now, is getting down to the Astros' facility."

It's a difficult balancing act, and the Astros are the ones sacrificing the most. Torrence misses summer 7-on-7 drills and workouts in Columbus, but otherwise he participates in all football activities from August until the next June.

The Astros, meanwhile, miss having Torrence in their spring camps, and they also watch him leave his minor-league team a month before the season ends.

They knew all that when they signed him, yet they paid Torrence a $123,500 bonus -- about five times the normal amount for his 16th-round draft slot.

"We had to give him a little more money because he had that football scholarship," said Nick Venuto, a Midwest area scout for the Astros. "We knew going in that he may pick one (sport) or the other, but we felt it was worth the risk."

Just wonder if it's a matter of time...............................:(

i was thinking the same thing.

with our depth at wr, it's gonna be extremely difficult to crack the 2 deep when he's missing 7 on 7s and other summer drills that allow wrs to build repoire with qb etc.

and he's missing time to improve in baseball too...

Sophomore Devon Torrence, who played both receiver and cornerback last year, will play exclusively on defense for the next several weeks

Glenville's Curtis Terry moves to fullback at Ohio State - Cleveland.com

Two ways for Torrence
Sophomore Devon Torrence is back playing his best high school position, cornerback, at least for the moment. Torrence was switched to receiver last season, then split time in spring ball.

Torrence was a 16th-round pick in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He just finished his second summer with the class-A Greeneville (Tenn.) Astros. In 64 career games, Torrence has hit .150, with 101 strikeouts in 206 at-bats.

"We can get him back into the fold from a receiver standpoint after he gets firmly entrenched (at corner)," Tressel said. "We think that he's going to be a good corner. I asked him how he was hitting the curveball this summer, and he was anxious to get back here.
