CB DerJuan "PeeWee" Gambrell (R.I.P.)

We tried to use Clifford as a corner for a bit, didn't we? I know that whole situation didn't exactly work, but I seem to remember that for some reason.

Either way, welcome to the family Mr. Gambrell. :osu:

DerJuan Gambrell of Rogers, center, wins the 110 meter hurdles against Roger's Jerrette Bradley, left, and Oregon Clay's Noah Buehrer during the City League track meet at Rogers.

Tripling on the boys side was senior DerJuan Gambrell of Rogers, an Ohio State football recruit who said he?s awaiting results of some necessary fourth-quarter academic work to qualify for eligibility to join the Buckeyes in the fall.

The versatile Gambrell won the 110 hurdles (14.56), the 400 (48.83), anchored the Rams? winning 1600 relay team, and placed second in the high jump at 6-1.

?My hurdles time was a personal best and that race went real smooth,? Gambrell said. ?I didn?t get my best [6-3] in the high jump, but I got second, and I almost got my personal best in the 400 [48.74]. So, the day went good.?

Rogers' DerJuan Gambrell wins the 400 meter dash during the Division I Regional track meet Friday at Amherst Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio. The Blade/Jeremy Wadsworth

AMHERST, Ohio ? Rogers? DerJuan Gambrell didn?t run at the Division I state meet as an individual qualifier in the 400 meters a year ago because of injury after qualifying a year earlier as a sophomore.

Last year?s setback served as motivation for this track season.

The Rams senior assured himself of a trip back to state competition yesterday evening when he streaked to a personal-record time of 48.08 to finish first in the 400 at the Division I regional meet at Amherst Steele.

?It was really important to me to get back there in my senior year in the 400 after getting there as a sophomore,? said Gambrell, who was hampered last spring with a hip injury.

Gambrell is one of several track and field athletes who placed among the top four spots in an event at the regional competition to guarantee a trip to the state meet.

Gambrell also qualified in two other events. He ran the anchor leg on the Rams? victorious 1600 relay team, which included Devante Blanks, Shane Royster, and Glandoy Hill. They posted a winning time of 3:22.10.

Gambrell also placed third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.67. Whitmer?s Mark Meyers was also timed crossing the finish line at 14.67, but he was awarded second place.

Gambrell Impressive Saturday
Watched DerJuan "Pee Wee" Gambrell play defensive back at Toledo Rogers his junior year and came away impressed. Tremendous athlete with physical skills and played hard. Honestly, on video, I liked one of his teammates just as well. After watching him at the District track meet last week, the Buckeyes were smart to offer him a scholarship.

Yesterday, at the Regional track meet, Gambrell qualified for the State Meet in three events. He qualified in the 400 meters his sophomore year, but was injured(hip) and do not get there last year. Yesterday he ran the 400m in 48.08. A personal best for him. He also qualified in two other events. Anchored the victorious 1600 meter relay team. Earlier in the meet, he placed third in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.67.

He must have been nicknamed "PeeWee" many years ago. Listed at 6'1-190 and looks every bit that size or bigger. Really cut! Think that he can play a number of positions for the Buckeyes. The endurance of a 400 meter guy and the speed and balance of a high hurdler. Outstanding at both, but most of all, a tremendous competitor.
