Rogers senior DerJuan Gambrell is one of the many from the area headed to Columbus this week hoping for a state title.

"I feel like I can put more on the last curve and put more on the last straightaway," said Gambrell, regarding his strategy in the 400 meters.

The meet will take place Friday and Saturday at Ohio State University's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Gambrell will also compete in the 110 hurdles and is part of a 1600 relay team with Devante Blanks, Glandoy Hill, and Shane Royster.

COLUMBUS ? It looked like DerJuan Gambrell might win a state title. Then, in the matter of seconds, it looked like Gambrell might finish toward the back of the pack in the Division I 400-meter run.

The end result for the Rogers senior was somewhere in the middle. Gambrell captured third place, the highest finish of any local D-I athlete in Saturday?s state track and field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Employing a strategy of beginning the race with a faster pace than usual, Gambrell led the field halfway around the track. Fatigue soon kicked in, and an exhausted Gambrell labored through the final 100 meters, finishing in a time of 48.72 ? two one-hundredths of a second ahead of Lexington?s Bryant Switzer.

?I came out a little hard trying to make up a little time, but it came back to bite me,? Gambrell said. ?That straightaway ? the last 100 [meters] ? was tough.?

Visibly exhausted, Gambrell was not his usual self later during the 1600 relay. Rogers was in ninth place when Gambrell accepted the baton to begin the final lap, and that?s where the Rams stayed.

I'm seeing if I can get any information on his status. I knew he had some academic problems, but I thought he ended up qualifying. I will report back if/when I hear anything.

Update: he's on the roster and made it through the clearing house. Rocking #18 this year.

They just fixed it. I had the roster up this morning. He was not on it. I double checked, then refresh, and presto, there he is.

Does this mean we can officially start the "Pee Wee for Heisman" campaign? Not since Richard McNutt have I seen such a talent. :tongue2:

He played the first game as well, anytime there's a double number the participation report has a good chance of going wonky, either omitting participants (Gambrell v. Akron) or including non-participants (Kenny Hayes v. Akron).

Good eye though.
