CB Denzel Burke (All B1G, All-American)

Given how the 3 other CBs played Saturday, I'm guessing Burke isn't coming back until he feels 100%, and that's probably the right call.
I was admittedly worried on Burke being out. After seeing Davison, Hancock and Mathews, there's really no rush. We'll need Burke at the end of November and thereafter, but I'm more than confident in those three guys until then.

Pass Efficiency ranking for the offenses the silver bullets face between now and then

Wiscy 116
Rutger 114
Sparty 112
Minne. 131

I’d say you’re being realistic

Thanks for the hard stats on future passing opponents, I figured those four were pretty bad but honestly not that low. Yikes. Even if Denzel is 100% right now, it might be best to rotate Mathews in with him when looking at the long haul...if someone goes down at CB, we need Mathews to have as much PT as possible.

That being said, Mathews has played a lot of meaningful minutes this year and Burke won't take long to shake off any rust. I am really liking where this group is as a whole coming down the stretch...if you think about the progression of this unit, it is unreal how much we have improved at CB and really the secondary as a whole. Burke has been a catalyst in that turnaround, I just prefer we manage his pitch count so he is full go when we really need him.

Can’t think of a bigger turnaround in talent from one year to the next for starters (or guys getting big minutes)

Cam Brown and Sevyn Banks were just very effective…AT ALL.

Plus Burke making a 180

Agreed, probably the biggest performance jump (or up there) I have seen. Burke is even better than his phenomenal frosh year, Hancock looks like the borderline 5* recruit we brought in, and Davison is performing so well after transferring in. Plus Mathews is playing great and looking like a mainstay in our secondary. Great CB play so far but Burke is the dude leading the charge imo...good players play good ball, great players get their teammates to play better around them and that is what Denzel is doing.

Two Buckeyes were named candidates for national awards on Tuesday.

Ohio State cornerback Denzel Burke was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors college football’s best defensive back. Quarterback Kyle McCord is one of 35 players on the Davey O’Brien Award’s “Class of 2023,” making him an official candidate to win the award given to college football’s top quarterback.
Burke makes the list of Thorpe semifinalists after a dominant first two months of the season in which he has recorded nine pass breakups – the most in the Big Ten – and one interception while allowing just 18 catches for 214 yards on 36 targets, per Pro Football Focus. Burke strives to become the third Buckeye cornerback to win the Jim Thorpe Award, previously won by Antoine Winfield in 1998 and Malcolm Jenkins in 2008.

Might be the best player in the team not named Marvin, and that's not hyperbole. Reminds me of Ahmed Plummer and after watching his highlights, I swear by it the way he gets in the pocket hip and loves to hit. You could probably throw out Ward as a more recent comparison, but for whatever reason that is who Burke reminds me of the most
