CB Antoine Winfield (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, Pro Bowl, All Pro)

Winfield won't let pain intercept playoff chance

Antoine Winfield seems more than willing to accept the tradeoff of persistent pain for unprecedented success.

On Sunday, the former Garfield High School and Ohio State star will play in the first championship game of his 11-year NFL career. His Minnesota Vikings take on the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome with the NFC title and a trip to the Feb. 7 Super Bowl on the line.

But Winfield, a cornerback named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl on Tuesday, is not expected to be in the starting lineup, although he will cover the slot receiver against the Saints. Since suffering a cracked right foot Oct. 18 that forced him to miss six games, Winfield's snaps have been reduced by the Vikings' coaches.

In last Sunday's 34-3 rout of the Dallas Cowboys, Winfield played in short-yardage and nickel situations, which meant more work than expected as the Cowboys threw 35 times. The Saints finished the season with the league's fourth-best passing attack and use three-receiver sets regularly, which means Winfield's aching foot will not be spared.

''Every game's going to be a setback. You cut, you feel it, you get pain,'' Winfield said in a telephone interview earlier this week. ''It's not going to get any better until the season is over and I can get off it. You've just got to fight through it.''

Starting corners enter offseason with injuries

Cornerback Cedric Griffin suffered a knee injury while covering the kickoff in overtime, while cornerback Antoine Winfield re-injured his right foot.

Griffin, a regular on the coverage unit, threw his helmet as he lay on the turf after the kickoff. He left the locker room with crutches Monday and there were indications that he had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Winfield re-injured his foot on one of the final plays in overtime and will have an MRI this week.

Winfield, who missed six games after fracturing his foot, said last week that he did not intend to play in the Pro Bowl after being added as an injury replacement.

Winfield will see a foot specialist
By JUDD ZULGAD, Star Tribune
Last update: January 27, 2010

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield is scheduled to see a foot specialist in North Carolina within the next two weeks.

Winfield missed six games after breaking his right foot in October and struggled in two games shortly after returning in December as he attempted to play all the snaps at his regular left corner spot. The Vikings moved him into the slot in nickel situations in the final regular-season game against the Giants in order to decrease his workload and help give him more time to heal.

Winfield was believed to have reinjured his foot in overtime of the Vikings' loss to New Orleans on Sunday, but coach Brad Childress denied that was the case at his season-ending news conference on Tuesday. "I think he's just hurting from the end of the season," Childress said. "He should be fine."

Winfield, however, underwent an MRI on his foot Tuesday, according to an NFL source. The results of that scan are not known. His appointment with a specialist is a sign that concern remains about his recovery.

Vikings' Antoine Winfield won't need foot surgery, expected to be healed for training camp
Favre thanks fans for 'memorable season' on his Web site

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield met with a foot specialist Thursday and will not need surgery, good news for the Pro Bowler, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Dr. Robert Anderson in North Carolina recommended rest for Winfield, who missed six games in 2009 because of a fractured right foot. Winfield is expected to be healed and ready for training camp, according to the source.

Contrary to reports, Winfield did not suffer a setback in the NFC title game, the source said. Winfield did not participate in the Pro Bowl, looking to avoid the risk of further injury.

He was limited to nickel back duty down the stretch of the Vikings' season because he wasn't completely healthy. But he is expected to bounce back next season, and that's a good sign for a team that could open training camp without starting right cornerback Cedric Griffin, who had surgery after the season to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Anderson, the Carolina Panthers' team orthopedist, recently performed surgery on Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart to correct a problem with his Achilles' tendon.

Winfield had 58 tackles with an interception and a sack in 10 games last season. He was injured in the Baltimore game in Week 6.

NOTES: Winfield said his broken right foot, which kept him out of six games last season, finally felt better two months ago. "I went and had an injection that stopped the inflammation and knocked everything out," he said. "I've been running without any pain. I can't wait" for the season to start. ... Winfield said he has been focusing on footwork drills and workouts he used to do at Ohio State "that kept me healthy."

Winfield returns: Cornerback Antoine Winfield said his right foot is doing ?great? and no longer causes him pain when he runs. Winfield missed six games after breaking his foot in October. He visited a foot specialist in North Carolina this offseason and said he turned a corner physically about two months ago.

?I went and had an injection that stopped the inflammation and knocked everything out,? he said. ?I?ve been running without any pain. I can?t wait. I missed out last year. I don?t feel like I even played last year.?

Winfield has been working out with a few other NFL players at a facility in Houston this offseason.

?The main thing was for me to rest it, make sure that I came back 100 percent,? he said. ?I didn't want to rush anything, go too hard and try to do all the OTAs and stuff. But I feel great right now. I'm excited. I can't wait."

MANKATO - The Vikings began training camp with some uncertainty in the defensive backfield, due to the fact starting right corner Cedric Griffin opened on the physically unable to perform list after suffering a torn left anterior cruciate ligament in the NFC Championship Game.

While it remains uncertain when Griffin will return, the Vikings are pleased to see that veteran left cornerback Antoine Winfield appears completely recovered after being slowed for much of last season because of a broken right foot.

"The foot feels good," Winfield said. "I was 100 percent probably two months after the season. I went and got a shot, got the inflammation out and was good to go."

Williams, Winfield hold no grudges

Playing against the Buffalo Bills doesn't mean much to defensive tackle Pat Williams and cornerback Antoine Winfield. It mattered in 2006 when the former Bills returned for a game as Minnesota Vikings teammates.

But too many years have passed. Their connection to Buffalo has diminished with time.

So Winfield and Williams are approaching Buffalo's visit Sunday like any other game on the schedule.

"The thing I wanted to do was go back to Buffalo [in 2006] and have about three interceptions and beat them by like 30 points," Winfield said with a laugh in a conference call with Buffalo media this week. "But that didn't happen. We lost that game. I enjoyed my time there, but it's in the past. It's another game for me."

Williams concurred.

"It doesn't matter who the team is," he said. "We just want to win."

Winfield was the Bills' first-round draft pick in 1999. He left after the 2003 season and signed a reported five-year, $36 million contract with the Vikings. Williams, who joined the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 1997, departed following the 2004 campaign. He joined Winfield in Minnesota for a three-year, $13 million deal.

Both players had very solid tenures in Buffalo (Winfield became the first cornerback in franchise history to lead the team in tackles in 2001), but the Bills opted not to meet their contract demands.

It looks like a bad move now because Winfield and Williams have earned every penny from the Vikings.

Winfield, 33, has been a model of consistency with a pair of Pro Bowl berths and a second-team All-Pro selection in 2008. Williams, who is 6-foot-3 and conservatively listed at 317 pounds, has been one of the NFL's elite run stoppers. He appeared in three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2006 to '08 and was second-team All-Pro in 2007.

Winfield's longevity is as remarkable as Williams' but for a different reason. At 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, the diminutive Winfield is still delivering big hits on ball carriers who outweigh him by 20 to 40 pounds.

"Antoine is a special, special player," Frazier said of the 32-year-old Winfield. "I've never seen anyone like him. For his size to hit people the way he does and cover people the way he does, he's a special, special player and we're very fortunate to have him on our football team. He's an extremely bright football player as well."

"I can honestly say that I've been blessed," said Winfield. "To be 5-9 and 180 pounds, to play in the NFL 12 years and start is a great accomplishment. But I can take it back to my work ethic. I work hard during the offseason. I try to stay in good shape and just go out there and try to make as many plays as I can. I play 100 percent every time I step on the field."

Winfield makes all-fundamentals team
Posted by Judd Zulgad
Last update: December 17, 2010

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield has been selected to the USA Football/NFL Players Association all-fundamentals team. USA Football is the sport's national governing body.

Twenty-six NFL players -- 11 on offenes, 11 on defense, four on special teams -- are selected to the team based on an "ability to consistently execute the fundamentals of their positions and for making a positive impact in their communities."

Winfield is an all-fundamentals selection for his ability to cover receivers man-to-man.

The press release on Winfield earning the honor reads: "He starts from a proper defensive back stance, keeps the receiver from running his route and maintains good position as the receiver tries to run downfield. Winfield visited Hennepin County Medical Center emergency room personnel to help recognize their work. He also volunteered in the Vikings? blood drive at Mall of America, donated cars to single mothers through the Minneapolis Urban League Employment and Training Program and recently hosted the Bolder Bowl with several of his teammates benefiting Bolder Options."
