CB Antoine Winfield (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, Pro Bowl, All Pro)

All-Decade Team: NFL
By Peter King

CB Antoine Winfield
Teams in 2000s: Bills, Vikings
Seasons in 2000s: 10

It pained me to leave Ronde Barber off the team, but to these eyes no corner has combined cover ability with physical play like Winfield. At 5-9, he's a rock-'em, sock-'em robot with the quickness of a classic tight-cover guy. Because he plays so hard, it's hard to knock Winfield for his 22 missed games in the decade. Others will have more stats than his 19 interceptions over the decade, but not many corners will ever have a 94-tackle season, as he did in 2003 with the Bills.

Vikings CB Winfield could return to action vs. Bengals
Posted: December 10th, 2009

Vikings Pro Bowl CB Antoine Winfield could return Sunday against the Bengals after missing the previous six games with a fractured right foot, according to a league source.

Winfield, regarded as one of the most sound cover men and best run-support defensive backs in the NFL, has increased his workload in practice and appears to be on track to return to action for the NFC North leaders? playoff push.

Winfield originally was injured during an Oct. 18 victory over the Ravens.

Minnesota Vikings' Antoine Winfield expects to play, but . . .

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield said he believes he will play Sunday against Cincinnati.

Winfield said today it will be a game-time decision whether he will play after recovering from a right foot injury.

Winfield is officially listed as questionable on the injury report, but he's encouraged by the way he felt this week in practice with no setbacks.

"I think this is the week I finally get back out there and get to get some action," Winfield said. "So we'll see how the (pregame) warmups go on Sunday, and hopefully I'm up (activated)."

Winfield originally was expected to miss about four to six weeks following a fracture he suffered Oct. 18 against Baltimore. But it's been almost two months since he was injured.

He suffered a setback in practice Nov. 27, which delayed his return.

"It's definitely frustrating," Winfield said. "It's a good thing that we're winning. Our record is 10-2; we're fighting for that position to get into the playoffs. Right now we're the No. 2 seed, trying to keep that so we keep that bye. The main thing is trying to get a win against Cincinnati."

Vikings CB Winfield will return vs. Bengals Posted: December 12th, 2009 | Steve Wyche |

Vikings Pro Bowl CB Antoine Winfield, who has missed the last six games because of a foot injury, will play Sunday against the Bengals, a source with knowledge of the situation said. It isn?t clear if Winfield, who?s listed as questionable, will start.

Winfield, considered to be one of the top run-support and play-making cornerbacks in the NFL, has been close to being ready to return for more than a week, the source said. However, the Vikings and Winfield wanted to be careful, so he was held out of last Sunday?s 30-17 loss to the Cardinals so he would be fully healed for the late-season push and playoff run.

Winfield has 30 tackles and one interception in six games this season.

Collision man Antoine Winfield saves Vikings from a wreck of a day against Cincinnati Bengals

Updated: 12/13/2009

It's tough to say for sure why the Vikings coaches refused to admit that Antoine Winfield had a fractured bone in his right foot. Perhaps they weren't required by the NFL to say anything more than "foot injury." But it really was a disservice to Winfield.

What were people supposed to think, that he was out six weeks with a sprain? That's an insult to a player who is competitive by nature. It makes him look as if he were some sort of malingerer.

"It was bad," Winfield noted of his injury after Sunday's 30-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

But on Sunday, Winfield made his return. Some might say just in time, too. On a day when Brett Favre looked like a 40-year-old quarterback, and the pass rush was less than fierce, Winfield anchored a strong performance by the Minnesota secondary that limited a potent Bengals offense.

Winfield led the team with nine tackles, forced a fumble and once performed a series of pushups right on the field between plays. It was his way of doing penance for failing to intercept a ball that hit him in the numbers. I was alarmed by those pushups. After all, he hadn't played in six weeks. What if those extra calisthenics left him gassed and vulnerable on the next play?

"Nah, I've been working out, running in the pool," Winfield said with a laugh. "It was automatic. I didn't even think about it. In practice when you drop a ball you automatically go down and do 10 pushups.

"I just dropped it," he added of the potential interception. "It hit me right in the chest. I should have made that play. It surprised me."
It's obvious what Winfield brings to the defense when he's in the lineup. The smallest man on the field is the surest tackler on the field. And the Vikings have struggled with missed tackles in recent weeks.

"I've pretty much perfected the art of tacking," Winfield said. "It's an attitude thing. I've been doing it my whole career, ever since I started playing football. So it comes natural."

What fun to watch Winfield put some nasty hits on folks twice his size. Loved the guy in S & G and love him now in that horned hat.

BTW - have the vikings become the Official Team of Hell's Angels MC? As a person of Nordic/Germanic roots I'm offended by the picture of white males with clubs and animal skins.

Well-rested Winfield ready for stretch run
By Michael Silver, Yahoo! Sports

As an 11th-year veteran coming off a six-week absence caused by a fractured foot, Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield(notes) looks at the unusual situations shared by the Colts and Saints as a golden opportunity.

From Winfield?s point of view, while being 13-0 affords those teams the chance to make history, that?s a secondary concern. To him, the opportunity to be rested and healthy for the playoffs is a greater luxury.

?If I was the coach of one of those teams, I?d probably rest who I need to rest,? Winfield said by telephone Monday, a day after helping the Vikings (11-2) roll to a 30-10 victory over the Bengals. ?It?s a long season, and guys are banged up. It?s important to keep people fresh for the playoffs, when you really need them at their best.?

Of course, some of this may be wishful thinking on Winfield?s part. Whereas the Colts have already clinched home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, the Saints must still fend off the Vikings for the top overall seed. With New Orleans set to host the desperate Cowboys on Saturday, wouldn?t it be wonderful if Sean Payton started erring on the side of resting his key players?

?That would be nice,? Winfield said, laughing. ?But I don?t think that?ll happen. Those guys are fighting to hold onto the No. 1 seed, and they know we?re coming.?

Winfield has the corner on game-altering plays
After missing six games because of a foot injury, the Vikings cornerback made it clear how much the team missed his ability to cover receivers and stuff running backs.
By JUDD ZULGAD, Star Tribune
Last update: December 19, 2009 -

Antoine Winfield might be diminutive in stature, but the 5-9, 180-pound cornerback has a big goal each time he takes the field.

"I want to be the difference-maker," he said this week. "I want to go out there and make a play that changes the game."

Winfield accomplished that last Sunday in the Vikings' 30-10 victory over Cincinnati and in the process provided a reminder of just what his team was missing as he sat out for six games because of an injury to his right foot.

"I definitely didn't forget, but I was reminded of how important he is to this defense and what type of a special player he is," linebacker Ben Leber said. "He makes plays that only Antoine can make. Whether it's his little slide under on a pulling guard, popping up making tackles or cutting guys down. That's just what Antoine does."

Winfield has forgettable fourth quarter
Antoine Winfield had a poor fourth quarter, and his coordinator believes the cornerback might not be 100 percent healthy.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Antoine Winfield said the fourth quarter of Sunday's 26-7 loss to the Carolina Panthers is one he'd rather forget.

The Vikings Pro Bowl cornerback gave up a long touchdown pass and missed several tackles that led to big plays in a fourth-quarter meltdown by the defense at Bank of America Stadium.

"Very disappointing," Winfield said.

Winfield: I'm never going to make an excuse
Posted by Judd Zulgad
Last update: December 23, 2009

Having covered Antoine Winfield since the 2005 season, it has been a rarity to see the cornerback miss a tackle once he has closed in on a receiver or running back. But Winfield, and many of his teammates, struggled to make simple tackles Sunday in the Vikings' loss at Carolina.

Told after Wednesday's practice that he seemed to miss as many tackles against the Panthers as he had in the past four-plus seasons, Winfield said: "I believe it. I think I missed three total. It was just bad body position. Sometimes I was up. Steve Smith, I missed two on him. He?s a quick guy, strong. It was just bad technique but something I could easily correct.?

A potential bigger concern than an off night for Winfield is the condition of his right foot. He missed six games over seven weeks after hurting the foot in October against Baltimore and after returning with a strong game against Cincinnati, he appeared to have problems on Sunday.

Another bad game for Winfield. Gave up big plays late in the game including the game losing touchdown.

I've watched him the last few weeks and he hasn't been good at all

Gruden even was apologetic claiming that Winfield has a bum ankle. Maybe he does. All I know is that he looked horrible on that last play.
