Winfield named NFC defensive player of the week
Posted by Chip Scoggins
Last update: December 29, 2010
Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield was named the NFC defensive player of the week for his dominating performance in Tuesday's 24-14 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Winfield was credited with nine tackles, two sacks, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hit, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. That play came on a sack/strip of Michael Vick, which Winfield returned 45 yards for a touchdown at the end of the first half.
The Vikings sent Winfield on corner blitzes throughout the first half and he was able to disrupt Vick's timing and force him into some poor throws.

2010 Vikings Review: Antoine Winfield grades out highest on defense
by Tom Pelissero
1500ESPN.com
Antoine Winfield (B+): Healthy again after battling a foot injury in 2009, Winfield (983 snaps, 98.2%) was on top of his game. Recorded 110 tackles (80 solo) and missed only five. Sealed a win against Detroit with an end-zone interception. Broke up red-zone passes against Chicago and the Giants. Got another interception against Chicago. Caused an interception with a hit against Chicago. Single-handedly changed the game at Philadelphia, turning 16 slot blitzes into two sacks and a strip-and-run touchdown. Did not commit a penalty. Allowed 59 completions in 84 targets (70.2%) for 463 yards (7.8 average) and 73.7 rating. Exclusively played the slot in the subpackages the Vikings used on more than half of all defensive snaps, so he wasn't challenged vertically the same way as outside corners. At age 33, Winfield doesn't have the speed to compete there consistently anyway. He's just so crafty and fundamentally sound he doesn't need to be fast to dominate in the slot.

Yards per pass
1. Antoine Winfield(notes), Minnesota Vikings (3.8 YPP, 62 passes)
This isn?t yards per completion; we?re just as interested in numbers that indicate incompletions. And Winfield was the best overall in this category ? and when you include his success rate below, his value comes into true focus.
Success Rate
1. Antoine Winfield, Minnesota Vikings
(71 percent, 62 passes)
Success rate is another Football Outsiders game-charting metric that indicates the percentage of plays targeting a defensive player on which the offense was unsuccessful. ?Unsuccessful? plays include incompletions, interceptions and the inability to gain 45 percent of necessary conversion yardage on first downs, 60 percent on second downs, and 100 percent on third and fourth down.
10. Antoine Winfield, Vikings (v): Winfield is the best open-field tackler in the game was named to his third straight Pro Bowl in 2010. Even though he isn't big, he is a tremendous cover-two corner and gave up one touchdown in close to 70 passes thrown his way. Age will soon be a factor, but in 2010 Winfield fought father time and won.
Best tackler, Antoine Winfield: Generously listed at 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, Winfield needs perfect form and a fearless attitude to bring down ball carriers who sometimes outweigh him by 100 pounds. Winfield has both. He stays low, doesn't fall for open-field moves and wraps up legs as if he is filming a fundamentals video on every play. There aren't many players, whether they're speed- or power-based, who can elude him. Last season for the Vikings, according to Football Outsiders, Winfield tied for the NFL lead with 28 "stops" against the pass.
Antoine Winfield: 2010′s Most Complete Corner?
July 10th, 2011 | Author: Sam Monson
How often do you hear Antoine Winfield?s name mentioned in the discussion of top cornerbacks in the league? He might be one of the most underrated players around, and he seems to be defying the laws of ageing by only getting better, playing his finest football over the past two seasons.
Sure, everybody loves to talk about him as the best tackling corner in the league, and announcers get a few minutes out of that every time Winfield makes his first play in the run game, but what if I was to tell you that Winfield was the best corner in the league in 2010? You?d think I was crazy, right?
That?s the level I?m talking about when I tell you he?s underrated: His 2010 season wasn?t just good, it was arguably the best season of any CB in the league ? have you heard anybody talk about it in those terms?
Let me start by telling you that Winfield finished the season as PFF?s top graded cornerback. As you know, that?s a composite grade, and it includes coverage, play against the run, penalties and even blitzing. Winfield was one of only a few players to grade positively across the board, in all areas of play.
I know there are some people who are only interested in coverage when it comes to a cornerback?s play, and for those people, Winfield wouldn?t be your top guy last season. That?s not to say he had a poor year in coverage, far from it, but he wasn?t our top graded player in that regard ? Champ Bailey was ? and what makes Winfield special is his ability to be a force in multiple areas of the game, something very rare today.
Obviously, coverage is the most important facet of any cornerback?s play, but offenses still run the ball anywhere between 40 and 50% of the time, and a corner that can?t hold up his end of the bargain in the run game is a problem, even if some people would prefer to bury their head in the sand about it because he can cover on the back end. Asante Samuel?s coverage numbers last season were bordering on ridiculous, but he was pulled from games by Eagles head coach Andy Reid for his inability to make simple tackles in the run game. This isn?t just us at PFF holding a purist view of things, you can?t just ignore two players out of 11 on D when it comes to the run game.

Antoine Winfield's full repertoire revealed
July, 11, 2011
By Kevin Seifert
In kicking off our summer Calling Canton series, we noted there are a number of ways for players to gain critical acclaim. Some generate immediate attention, others blossom later in their career and a few benefit from adjusted judgments over time.
A few of you tripped over that final category, but I think we have an excellent example in Minnesota Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield. To be clear, I'm not including Winfield in this series. Fair or not, a player with three Pro Bowl selections in 13 seasons isn't likely to draw the serious attention of the voting committee.
Jeff Hanisch/US Presswire
Antoine Winfield has been a steady presence in the Minnesota secondary since joining the team for the 2004 season.
With that said, I'm happy to see Winfield benefiting from adjusted judgment over time in the final years of his career.
Cornerbacks with low interception totals are often bypassed for postseason awards, and Winfield played 10 years before his first Pro Bowl recognition. Even Winfield has admitted his Pro Bowl years weren't necessarily his best, but it takes time for some less tangible attributes to be evident on a national scale.

Tom Powers: Recharged cornerback Antoine Winfield high on Vikings' chances

TOM POWERS
At 34, Antoine Winfield isn't going to get too many more kicks at the can.
"I'm with you on that!" he said with a laugh after the Vikings' practice Thursday. "I've been at it for 13 years, and I don't see myself playing 10 or 13 more years. But maybe this is going to be our year."
Yes, and maybe my aunt Matilda will lose 80 pounds, undergo full-body electrolysis and win the Miss America Pageant. This Vikings team is riddled with holes, but you have to love Winfield's enthusiasm. After Thursday's practice, he stayed out on the field catching balls from the quarterbacks, running through the practice cones and just generally enjoying himself.
"I like our team," he insisted.
There is, at least, a hint of promise in the air as Leslie Frazier runs his first Vikings camp. The players appear to like and respect him, which already puts him well ahead of his predecessor. And the best thing about Training Camp 2011 is that it is not Training Camp 2010, which was a prelude to a stressful, awful season.
"It was," Winfield agreed. "I've never been through one of those. We didn't expect to be 6-10 and finish last. We had a few injuries and distractions. I think we handled them OK, but our record didn't show it."
Winfield tossed out the word "distractions" as if maybe a couple of bugs bounced off his car windshield. But with the Brett Favre drama, Randy Moss debacle, Brad Childress firing and Metrodome roof collapse, among other things, there really were a few "distractions."
And when the season ended, everybody was drained. Winfield didn't want to think about football for a good long while. He needed to mentally rejuvenate. So he and his wife packed their bags and boarded a plane. To anywhere.
"I went to the Bahamas, Brazil, Mexico, Vegas, Miami," he said, laughing. "I've been all over! It was like every other week we'd take a trip."
Now, he's recharged and ready to go. It was fun watching him cover his teammates on passing routes during practice. He is entering his eighth season as a Viking and is working under his second owner, third head coach and fourth defensive coordinator. He has three more years, after this one, left on his contract. The left cornerback position remains in good hands.

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield expected to miss Sunday's game with neck injury

Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield is expected to miss the Vikings' game Sunday against Arizona with a neck injury, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Winfield, who did not participate in Wednesday's practice, underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam Wednesday.
The severity of the injury is unknown, but the Vikings plan to hold out Winfield based on his pain, the delicate nature of neck injuries and his importance to the team.
Playing him could be risky if there is structural damage.
Winfield has 35 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception this season. He hurt his neck on a gang tackle of Chiefs running back Dexter McCluster in Sunday's 22-17 loss at Kansas City.
