Cavaliers caught off guard by Sixers
Philadelphia's tempo too fast for Cavs, who fail to defend in defeat

<!-- begin body-content -->PHILADELPHIA - Mike Brown hates this type of game, and for good reason.
``It won't win in the playoffs, and it won't even get you to the playoffs,'' said the Cavaliers coach after his team lost 116-107 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
The problem wasn't so much the verdict, as the tempo.
Philadelphia ran and shot and scored.
The Cavs ran and shot and lost.
Brown shook his head as he thought of the 76ers scoring 116 points, the highest game total allowed by the Cavs this season. And how they shot a stunning 53 percent, often on layups, dunks and open jumpers. And how the Cavs got behind early and stayed behind, never catching up.
``I hate this kind of basketball,'' he said. ``It's a playground game.''
What hurt the coach most was defense -- there was none.
And patience -- not much of that, either.
When you play the Sixers, you expect Allen Iverson to score -- which did, as in 29 points. But that's actually four below his average.
He was 10-of-24 shooting, decent but not spectacular.
But the Cavs couldn't stop Chris Webber (24 points, 14 rebounds) and Andre Iguoudala (25 points).
Or how about this?
Ex-Cavalier Kevin Ollie (eight points) outscored Sasha Pavlovic, Eric Snow and Damon Jones combined! Those three Cavalier guards were on the court for 92 rather invisible minutes, scoring seven points on 2-of-14 shooting.
``This game had absolutely nothing to do with our shooting,'' said Brown. ``This was about not being able to guard.''
The Cavs are 1-2 against the Sixers, a team with a modest 26-27 record. They struggle with teams that like to run. Rather than try to slow the tempo and work the ball inside, the Cavs run with them.
Usually, they lose, especially since Larry Hughes (finger surgery) went down 28 games into the season.
LeBron James (33 points, 13-of-24 shooting) can thrive in a fast tempo, but many of the other Cavs just seem left behind. Many NBA games come down to a test of wills -- which team dictates how the game will be played.
The Cavs weren't determined enough to slow the Sixers, who scored at least 28 points in every quarter.
Early in the game, center Zydrunas Ilgauskas (27 points) tried to keep things close. He had 22 points at the half, but scored only five points and took a mere three shots in 12 second-half minutes.
The Cavs seemed to forget he was on the court.
Philadelphia is a soft defensive team vulnerable to giving up points near the basket. Backup forwards Donyell Marshall (16 points) and Anderson Varejao (11 points) combined for 27 points and 11 rebounds. But the Cavs would start chasing the Sixers up and down the court and forget to pass the ball to their big men.
``They scored some easy buckets and got up big early,'' said James. ``We wasted a lot of energy trying to catch up.''
A year ago, the Cavs missed the playoffs by a game, as they were 12-19 after the All-Star break. They are now 1-1 this season after the break, and Brown knows a way to prevent another second-half collapse.
``We just need to defend a lot better than we did,'' he said.
Like I said exhawg, Allen Iverson is the baby of the NBA. He leads the league in foul shots attempted, yet he still bitches to the refs every time down the court. Its funny that its suspose to be a foul when the player with the ball goes out of his way to ignitiate contact.
Might as well give the Philadelphia fans whistles so that they can all call the game, it couldnt get much worst.
Since you know AI's going to get the call every time he drives you might as well put in a bench player and say foul him hard every time he drives. AI is a tough little SOB, but he can't take a beating from a PF/C very long if you make it a point to get a good shot on him.
Kevin Ollie had more points(8) yesterday than he had in his Cav career. Snow was just disgusting to watch, he couldnt hit anything, same with Sasha. Lebrons defense was looking better and consistently improving, but it took a huge step backward, screw that, it just fell off of a cliff.
