This game was not surprising at all, aside from Graham's performance. Lebron played some really, really good defense in the first half. But, it has become painfully obvious that it's impossible for him to keep it up for 48 minutes. This team needs his offense far too much for him to expend the amount of energy needed to play top-notch defense night in and night out.

I've also become convinced that Lebron is the greatest player I've ever seen .... at taking the ball to the basket. Unless he gets triple teamed, he's practically impossible to stop - and even then, he hits the open man.

Yeah I think Jackson might have lost his shot with the Cavs, or maybe Newble. If they don't pick up Grahmn after his 10 day contract I will be extremely pissed off.

As for defense all game I think it will come, and he tends to get up more for biger games, so I think it a big game he will play hard D all game long.

I'm pleased with Graham's play, but I'm not convinced yet that he can be an everyday player in this league. He's going to have to prove over the next few games.

He has proved more in the past 3 games than what I have seen out of Newble or Jackson in the past 2-3 years.

He has a nice jumper, with ability to hit a 3 ball. He is very aggressive going to the hole. If we werent playing Tim Duncan tonite, I think he either finishes or gets a foul call.

He also excels on the other end of the court.

Win is one to study

Cavs' performance may be best of season

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

<!-- begin body-content -->CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers should have the film from Monday night's game with the San Antonio Spurs readily available on the bench for quick viewing the rest of the season.
It should be on a loop on the personal flat-screen televisions in their lockers. Joe Tait's radio call should be downloaded onto their iPods for them to listen to as they sleep.
Not just because it was a 101-87 win over the defending world champions. In terms of focus and execution, it might've been the Cavs' (30-21) most complete game of the season. The contrast with their previous two sluggish efforts, like numerous games earlier this season, was sharp as this mystifying season rolls along.
The uniforms and faces were vaguely similar to those of the disheveled crew that reported to work in the last home game, a hapless loss to the Golden State Warriors 48 hours before. But nothing else was the same.
The Spurs, who had a nine-game winning streak snapped, were not on their game, and the Cavs had them on a back-to-back -- a situation in which they are just 3-6 this season. But the Cavs outplayed them in every facet. Will it last?
This team makes it hard to tell, but it was savory for one night.
LeBron James was the definition of intense, from his steely gaze to his resolve.
Even against one of the best defensive teams on the planet, he decided he was not going to be stopped from getting to the basket, an idea that was not on his brain in the previous game.
Even against the Spurs' (40-11) help defense and basket defenders, he slithered his way to hoop after hoop. On Saturday, he took two shots inside the 3-point line in the second half. On Monday, he scored on nine layups or dunks in the second half. In all, he scored 44 points, his third-highest total of the season, on an efficient 19-of-33 shooting.
``I wanted to come out aggressive and get my team rolling,'' James said. ``I didn't want to settle, I wanted to attack, and it opened things up.''
His teammates noticed his intent. Instead of settling for all those 3-pointers as usual, they too looked for more reasonable options and made smart, crisp decisions and passes. The result was just 10 3-point tries, a season low, and just six turnovers, one off a season low. Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Drew Gooden added 10 and 10. Stephen Graham, on a 10-day contract, had eight points and five rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.
``We brought focus, energy and effort to a big-time game,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said. ``LeBron did a great job attacking the rim; he willed himself to the rim, and he willed us to this win.''
James was also impressive on defense. He was assigned to cover slick fellow All-Star Tony Parker, who killed the Cavs with drives in their last meeting. James allowed him to penetrate but worked to stay in front of him and used his length to make it tough for Parker to pass or shoot with a good look.
Parker finished with just four points and four assists, and seven turnovers. Fellow All-Star Tim Duncan had 19 points and 10 rebounds, but scored just three points in the second half.
The Cavs are now 14-2 vs. teams above .500 at home; they face a sagging Celtics team in Boston on Wednesday.
``We have to grow up, we can't keep beating teams like this and lose to sub-.500 teams,'' James said. ``We have to get better.''

Hughes will have another surgery

CLEVELAND Larry Hughes and the Cavaliers have been dealt a setback.

The 6-foot-5 guard will have a second surgery on his broken right middle finger today in Baltimore. The Cavs say a projected timetable for his return will be established following surgery.

Hughes did not receive good news last week when doctors told him his finger was not healing as fast as the Cavaliers hoped. He underwent his first surgery Jan. 6 and was expected to be out six to eight weeks.

“We did not expect to have a second surgery,” General Manager Danny Ferry said. “But things were not healing as expected, and the course of action we decided to take is go back in and see why.

“Larry was frustrated and in disbelief. He actually feels good. But with all the tests that have been gone on, you just knew it wasn’t healing the right way. Hopefully this is a bump in the road and we get him back before the end of the year.”

Hughes, the Cavs’ second-leading scorer and best one-on-one defender, injured his finger during preseason. He tried to fight through it, but the finger kept getting worse.

Doctors recommended Hughes have surgery last month when they first diagnosed the injury as a broken finger. Why the bone is not healing faster will not be known until today.

“It’s not a flexibility thing,” Ferry said. “His range of motion is pretty good, but he could damage it worse if he plays and it’s not healed properly.”

Hughes, who signed a five-year, $60 million contract in the off-season, averaged 16.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 28 games. The Cavaliers were 18-10 with him in the lineup.

“I hope this surgery helps Larry out first,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “Obviously if it helps him out, it will definitely help us out. He’s a competitor and wants to be out there as much as anybody.”

Hughes has had just one injury-free season during his eight years in the NBA. How this latest setback affects what the Cavs may or may not do before the trading deadline remains to be seen. The deadline is Feb. 23 at 3 p.m.

“At this time of year, every team is calling in, exploring,” Ferry said. “The are 29 other GMs who are calling me, or I’m calling them. That’s part of the process and part of the business.

“With an injury, this does change it in some ways. How? I still think we’re trying to determine what that is.

“We’ll see how we play the next 10 days. ... Maybe we can (add another player), or maybe we go forward with the guys we have and make that work.”

NEWBLE RETURNS

Forward Ira Newble returned to The Q for a game Monday for the first time since he was released from Cleveland Clinic.

Newble was treated for a facial infection for over a week and hopes to be back in the lineup next week after the All-Star break. He missed the first 21 games of the season because of a strained right foot.

“I’m definitely anxious to get back out there,” Newble said. “This is my first season where I’ve missed a substantial amount of time. It’s just one of those frustrating years when injuries happen.” Reach Repository sports writer Mike Popovich at (330) 580-8341 or e-mail: [email protected]

I have to give some dap to all of you who said the Cavs were going to win last night. I didn't see it happening, but I didn't see Lebron shutting down Parker either. I was only able to watch the 4th quarter because my team was busy getting whooped on 20 times worse than the Spurs did last night. It's amazing how the Cavs are good enough to go out and beat any team in the NBA, but they can also be bad enough to go out and lose to any team as well.
I think Graham has earned a second 10 day deal at the very least. If he can keep this up for 20 days then I believe the Cavs will sign him for the rest of the season. Graham and Pavlovic make a decent combo at the SG since they both seem to get in foul trouble. Pav is a better shooter, but Graham is more athletic and a better defender. I would rather see Graham play than Newble when he gets healthy because SG has some offensive game.
