Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we'll call this initial deal "Trade #1"), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a "Trade Exception". Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc.) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc. are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.

The Hawks are reportedly considering trading point guard Jeff Teague and swingman Mo Evans for guards Ramon Sessions and Manny Harris.
Teague could end up being the best player in the deal, but Sessions would help the Hawks win right now.

Cavaliers: Trade chatter intensifies as deadline looms (with videos)
Published: Wednesday, February 23, 2011
By Friday, the Cavaliers could have a completely new look.
Of course, there's always the possibility they could stand pat and play the second half of the season with the same 10-46 bunch they used in the first half.
Things are fluid now, one day shy of the Thursday's 3 p.m. trade deadline. The Cavs are talking about a half-dozen deals with numerous teams.
Some of the talk surrounds their $14.5 million trade player exception. That could involve Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace, a player they've discussed on and off for quite some time.
One thing they're talking about is trading veteran swingman Anthony Parker. They'd like Bulls center Omer Asik or Celtics center Semih Erden in return, but have been denied. They are now reportedly asking for a first-round pick for Parker.
Parker, 35, said he's not concerned with the trade chatter.

The Charlotte Bobcats seem intent on moving Gerald Wallace to a new team by the Thursday deadline and have aggressively courted the Mavericks, Rockets, Clippers, Pacers and Cavs. The asking price has been an expiring contract and a protected first-round pick.
So far they've been unable to get a team to bite, though there have been rumblings Wednesday morning that the Cavs may use their $14.5 million trade exception generated in the LeBron James sign-and-trade this summer to land Wallace by the deadline.

The Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed in principle to a trade that would send Baron Davis and the Clippers' 2011 first-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Mo Williams and Jamario Moon, league sources confirmed to ESPN.com.
Davis
Williams
The deal saves the Clippers considerable money the next two seasons while giving them a younger point guard who made the All-Star team while playing with LeBron James.

y0yoyoin;1878938; said:i think this is the type of change of scenery mo needs to maybe end his season on a high note...i talked to a cavs assistant who pretty much confirmed that when mo is hurt, its really mo just being a bitch because hes mentally unstable...so LA could help all of that...i also love this trade, because of most importantly the first round pick, which will hopefully be in the top 7...maybe by an act of god we could actually end up with picks #1 and #2...that would be insane....Davis probably wont even play for the cavs this year, there were talks of him being out for multiple games for the clippers before the trade even happened...im assuming he is very unhappy about this trade, even was quoted as saying he was "stunned"...i can see how someone who grew up in LA, played college ball there, and was now playing back in LA professionally, would be pissed off at being traded to Cleveland in the middle of the winter to be on the worst team in the NBA...Davis could very well be a bigger head case then ricky davis was, or maybe coach scott can change things...who knows...all i know is we traded a bi-polar and jamario moon for a possible hurt headcase and an unprotected future lottery pick....nice job grant!
