Cavs 09-10 Season (official thread)

Title > Z

That's my feeling on the subject. I'm sure he understands, and I'm sure he'd tell them to trade him if it meant Cleveland would get the title. I want him back too - but I think the Cavs are looking out for their best interests (aka winning a title).

Thank you Danny Ferry. Once we re-sign Z, we'll have traded just a 1st rounder for Antwan Jamison. Very very nice.

The man really is a great GM.

-Gave up Damon Jones and Joe Smith to get Mo.

-Gave up Sasha and B. Wallace to get Shaq.

-Gave up 1st round pick to get a guy the averages 20+ points and 8 + rebounds a game.

Robbery would be an understatement on all of those deals.

They are moves that only work if Lebron stays and commits to the franchise. If we don't win a title this year and he leaves, I'm going to be pretty salty about it because we will have nothing to show for all of it (except a mass exodus of bandwagoners - most of which I can easily peg anyway).

I still hold out hope that Z will be back (which I actually think will happen), but if we don't get him back, I would hate to think we sold him out for nothing.
Really, that's all up to Z. His contract is obviously going to be bought out, so he could sign with the Cavs for a lot less...and he would actually make more this year overall. If Z wants to stay a Cav, then he will be able to, no question. Actually, for Z, this is great. He gets 30 days rest, and will actually make MORE money than he would have otherwise. Plus when he comes back, he's part of an even better team. Z has obviously accepted not getting a ton of minutes this year. I think he just wants to be a part of a Cavs championship team. He had a ton of fun with this team...and I still see that happening.

He obviously could sign with anybody, and his agent is talking about other teams showing interest...and that's up to Z. If he wants to go somewhere else, and try to get a few extra bucks, then he can. But it's OBVIOUS that Ferry is going to try to sign Z in 30 days...and Z will end up making more money than he would have had he not been traded at all if he comes back with the Cavs. I can't see any hard feelings being there.

If Z goes somewhere else...then that is on him at this point. And Z can't feel to bad in any case...he got traded for Jamison...you can't feel too bad when you are traded for such a high profile player.

Z has just one question he needs to ask himself...Do I want a ring? If so...sign with the Cavs. If not...go elsewhere.

If for some reason they don't buy out Z's contract...then that would suck for him and the Cavs. If this happens, and the Cavs win the championship, then I feel like Ferry should give the guy a ring. I know that isn't conventional...but he would deserve it.

per windhorst, washington is about $1 million over the luxury tax line, which would be remedied through a buyout. Z's agent has already said they will ask for a buyout, and that Z loves cleveland and wants to win a championship.

dallas is going to try and sign him, but the cavs can offer more money, and are clearly in better position to win it all.

i think it's clear what will happen.

A Cavs Championship ceremony without "Z" on the roster will be a travesty. And again, if he's not here to enjoy it, then I basically hope that they don't get it.

The NBA is a business. Z's been a great player to the Cavs, and the Cavs have made Z a very, very rich man. It's not like he hasn't gotten anything out of the deal over the years. The Cavs aren't a charitable organization--they're trying to win a championship.

Thank God none of the cliff jumpers around here play for or work for the Cavs organization. Your sour grapes over losing Z and hoping the Cavs don't win it all if they don't resign him makes me sick. If you can't root for this team now when they're making moves to help them win an NBA Championship then get the fuck out and stay out. I've been a fan of everything Cleveland my entire life and that's a hell of a lot longer than anyone on has been on this Cavs roster. I applaud Danny Ferry for this type of move even if we don't win it all. Big picture is, he made the move, and that is better than doing nothing and hoping they have enough to win it all this year.

Championships are rare and when you're talking about the city of Cleveland it's very rare and getting one is bigger than any one player. Especially considering he set this deal up to potentially get said player back in 30 days.

None of those trades happen without an owner that's willing to spend whatever is necessary, regardless of luxury tax implications.

Exactly, I was going to say the same thing.

I LOVE this trade. I can't wait to see the new rotation at PF and C, especially if/when Z comes back.

I don't think there is THAT much sour grapes in trading away Z. It had to be done and if Z doesn't come back and we win the championship I know that won't change how happy I'll be winning the championship.

Now personally... I would really hope Z comes back because of what he has done with this franchise. Also, I am somewhat biased because I can claim Z is my neighbor, well... he lives 2 streets down from me and have seen him walking his dog (believe me... that dog is HUGE) now and then in the summer.

Now a lil off topic... how silly does that puppet commercial with Z look now that he isn't on the team

Don't worry, it's just setting up the real-life moment when he walks back into the locker room in a little over 30 days asks, "Who wants to buy some DVDs?!"

The 30 days are to give Jamison time to learn the handshakes before Z gets back. We don't want him to embarrass himself.

Kings trading Martin for McGrady - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

If T-Mac stays with the Kings and ends up with a buyout, he hopes to join a playoff contender. A source close to him says he would like to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers or Cleveland Cavaliers.
While there?s no evidence the Lakers have interest, Cavs GM Danny Ferry had done a little research on T-Mac during his exile from the Rockets. Still, the Cavaliers traded for Antawn Jamison on Wednesday and it?s extremely unclear whether they would want to risk disrupting their chemistry to bring on another former All-Star ? one who has spent the season recovering from microfracture knee surgery.

Interesting, but I don't really like the idea. He seems like too much of a me-first player.

Antawn Jamison makes Cleveland Cavaliers title favorites - Ian Thomsen - SI.com

Second is that this trade, more than anything, is proof that the current collective bargaining agreement is broken and badly in need of overhaul. If the team with the best record can acquire a no-nonsense star like Jamison and then retrieve an asset like Ilgauskas, something is seriously wrong with the system. No one can say there is anything dirty about an Ilgauskas buyout either, because it is in the best interests of the Wizards to pursue such an agreement to limbo themselves under the luxury tax, and Ilgauskas may well decide it is his ambition to return home to Cleveland in order to avoid disrupting his young family. The current CBA has essentially leveraged this deal, with Ferry knowing how to manipulate it in his team's favor.

The narrative for the last several years is that Danny Ferry is an idiot, that LeBron has the weakest supporting cast in the league and that the Cavs have failed to surround him with competent players. I've never bought that - if you go back through the Cavs' rosters since LeBron arrived, it's clear to see that Ferry has made incremental improvements in the quality of this team every year. Even when he brought on a guy like Larry Hughes and signed him to that awful contract, it was an improvement at the time. People were looking for him to assemble a championship roster in one fell swoop - like Danny Ainge was able to when Kevin McHale practically gave away Garnett to his former team. Ferry didn't have the benefit of a favor or a sweetheart deal like that, so he had to do it slowly. Over time he able to...

...essentially traded Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Sasha, Z, and Damon Jones for Shaq, Mo Williams, and Antawn Jamison.

Now that people are starting to realize what's taking place, the narrative is going to change. The system is not intended to benefit teams from places like Cleveland - if anything it's supposed to keep them in their place. This assertions from the media are so transparent it should be embarrassing. There's nothing wrong with the system when teams like the Knicks and Nets can tank nearly half a decade in an effort to arrange enough cap room to sign away superstar players. There's nothing wrong when Kevin McHale practically gives away one of the best players in the league - to his storied former team, no less. If the Cavs and Danny Ferry have the audacity to stand in their way or improve their own lot it's an indication of a broken system though?! Gimme a break!

He's not going to the New York after all? :slappy: Yet another shitty day for idiot Knick fans and basketball journalists.

As for the idea of the Cavs getting McGrady after a buyout... No way. Has he ever won a playoff series in his life? The Rockets advanced last year, but McGrady was out with an injury. The Cavs don't need any part of that bad mojo.

Thursday, 8:30 a.m.: Rockets agree to send McGrady to Kings

The Houston Rockets have reached an agreement in principle to acquire Sacramento Kings guard Kevin Martin, league sources confirmed to SI.com. The deal will send Martin, along with Sergio Rodriguez, Hilton Armstrong and Kenny Thomas to Houston for McGrady, Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey.
The Kings now are reportedly negotiating with New York to possibly flip McGrady to the Knicks. New York, a source close to McGrady told SI.com, continues to be his No. 1 landing spot.
However, even if a deal with the Knicks cannot be hammered out before Thursday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, a source said the Rockets-Kings deal would still go through. Sacramento could negotiate a buyout of McGrady's $22.5 million salary and allow McGrady to sign with New York as a free agent.

OK, so the Knicks might get him anyway. But... they don't want him for his expiring contract, they want him for actual basketball?
