Cavs 08-09 Season - Central Div Champs (official thread)

I think the main thing is getting everyone healthy and staying healthy...

Shaq really doesn't do anything for us...

If we get West back, to go along iwth Kinsey playing, Boobie, Mo, Wally, Sasha in the backcourt we are strong there...Shooting defense, length, speed, it is just a matter of matchups when we have everyone healthy...

And we keep JJ and Andy which I think is the best thing we could of done...They have played all year with LBJ, know how to play with him...Hustle like crazy, and are devloping there game and playing very high level for us...

I think the problem is that they want to get rid of Ben's contract if they're going to take on Shaq's. Both of those guys are under contract for next year and I'm not sure they can afford both.

So what if Shaq had a bad deal that would be on the team next year. Not like we could have signed anyone anyway (even with Wally's contract expiring we wouldn't have been able to sign anyone). It is just extra money that Gilbert would have had to pay out  Shaq's deal runs out when Ben's does after next season so it wouldn't have affected the big free agent class of 2010. PLUS technically if Shaq gets worst next year he would have been an expiring deal the Cavs could have traded (or Ben) if we needed to make a deal to get over the top next year.

Now getting another wing player in return might have been the deal breaker, and why supposedly the Cavs were trying to get a 3rd team involved in the deal. But really... to me that is a piss poor excuse.

I agree with this, but Shaq would've been nice.

If West can get healthy and play at his pre-injury level, we'll be straight. He can guard Kobe and Bron can guard Lamar Hoe-dom....to keep his ass off the glass.

How doesn't he do anything for us? It gives us a legit post offensive player, it allows Z to come off the bench. The combo of the two allows us to play each 24+ minutes to keep them fresh and healthy. While Shaq has seen his better days he still is a defensive presence.

So he would add alot to this team. It would add more swagger to this team and a guy that knows how to win it all.

Hell yea I can see why Ferry refused to part with Wally and Pavlovic for Shaq. The Suns didn't want Wallace and his 14Mill for next season. They wanted the expiring and Pavs, who has only 1.5 guaranteed for next year.

It doesn't hurt the team one bit to let Wallys contract expire. Why trade him if you're not going to improve the club overall ? Why the hell would anyone want Shaq and Wallace on the books for 34 Mill next season ?

If Wally and Pavs go for Shaq, who would cover the minutes for both of them? LBJ would have to play all 48.

It's certainly not the worst thing that could happen.

The Magic deal for Alston was pretty nice for them.

You're acting like that's a bad thing. At least in the Playoffs, he possibly will. But in the regular season, he doesn't need to be burned out for the final stretch, I agree. But him playing all game is not a bad thing.

I know what you're getting at, but sometimes him playing CAN be a bad thing. Now, by no stretch of the imagination, am I saying the team is better without him. But when he's out, the ball moves better and more set plays are ran. While he's in there, there's too much standing around and watching. I really can't complain too much about it, because this team is still 41-11, but come playoff time, the should be addressed.

Shaq trad for Big Ben and Sasha would of been a good deal. Ben is a one sided player (rebounds). Sasha's playing time is down this year, however he is a good 3 point shooter.
The thing with Shaq and what he would of brought to the table is his experience and his size down low. Z is only going to give us 30 minutes in the post season were you have that option to bring shaq in to replace him. Also one big factor with Shaq is his ability to guard D. Howard in the playoffs. I just believe if you bring Shaq to Cleveland your going to get more looks for Lebron. No matter what Cleveland does this issue has to be dealt with in the future you have two Big Men that are coming to the end of there careers (same with shaq i know) and we need to look and filling that void in years to come.

I guess we have 3 young guards under contract for several years to come. If we resign Andy this off season we have JJ for the foreseeable future. I think the Cavs are going to have to run hard at a guy like Bosh in 2010. Maybe if the Raptors suck again next year and they know that Bosh won't resign with them, they will look to get something for him rather than let him walk. JJ could be a very apealing player by then. If Bosh does walk the Cavs will have the space to sign him or any other FA next year. They'll still have Ben's 15 mil expiring deal next year that they can trade if they want to.
I am disapointed that they didn't make a move this year with all the pieces that they had to use, but they are one of the top 3 teams in the NBA and have a good chance to win it all if they get some breaks. I guess some teams weren't willing to part with good players for the sole reason of clearing cap space. I'll go ahead and blame the Lakers for their steal of a trade last year, which made teams start to think twice about unloading players just to save money.
IMO JJ needs to get 20 minutes a game for the rest of the season. The more he plays the better he'll get and he might be able to turn into a pretty good player by the time the playoffs roll around. The example I heard was the improvement Boobie made in the second half of his rookie year. JJ has the ability to be the second best big shooter we have and is already the best finisher at the hoop of the bigs. He just needs experience.
