Joshua Gunter/The Plain DealerCan Mo Williams provide the offensive support that the Cavaliers and their fans have craved for LeBron James?
The starters: 2 MO WILLIAMS
6-1, 190, sixth season
Contract status: Will make $8.3 million in the second year of a six-year, $51.5 million deal.
Comment: The most offensively talented point guard the Cavs have had since Andre Miller left in 2002. Is excellent at running the fast break and is an efficient shooter and superior foul shooter. Has some limitations defensively but should give the team lots of options and be a major upgrade.
13 DELONTE WEST
6-3, 180, fifth season
Contract status: Will make $3.8 million in the first year of a three-year, $13 million deal. Final year is partially guaranteed.
Comment: Can make significant contributions at both ends and is the team's best on-ball perimeter defensive player. A streaky shooter, will look to push on offense when playing point guard and breakdown defenses with penetration. A perfect third/combo guard who may start or come off the bench.

Meet the 2008-09 Cavaliers centers

Joshua Gunter/The Plain DealerZydrunas Ilgauskas remains the foundation of the Cavaliers' inside game.
The starter: 11 ZYDRUNAS ILGAUSKAS
7-3, 260, 11th season
Contract status: Will earn $10.8 million in the fourth year of a five-year, $53 million deal.
Comment: Still producing at age 33, he is one of the best shooting and offensive rebounding big men in the league. He has his limitations on defense, which the Cavs know, but he's very important to the balance of their offense. Has dealt with back problems over the last year, so the team will need to monitor his minutes.
The bench:
17 ANDERSON VAREJAO
6-11, 260, fifth season
Contract status: Will earn $5.7 million in the second year of a three-year, $17.4 million deal. He can opt out after this season.
Comment: He was playing at the highest level of his career before an ankle injury last January derailed him. He's looked very strong in the preseason, especially rebounding and shooting. His versatility for a big man is valuable.

Cavaliers Insider: Skipping the Celtics' party

Winslow Townsend/AP file photoFrom left, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce will get one more chance to celebrate last season's championship Tuesday night. But the Cavaliers won't be on the sidelines watching.
So much for that theory about the Cavaliers getting motivated by watching the Boston Celtics receive their championship rings and hoist another championship banner Tuesday night in T.D. Banknorth Garden. LeBron James revealed on Monday that the Cavs will sit this one out. They'll wait in the locker room until the hoopla is over.
"We don't need to be out there watching that, we need to get ready for the game," James said before the team left for Boston. Congratulations to them. But we're not [like] the fans of Boston. We don't need to be out there clapping for them getting rings."
James brushed off the notion of using the ceremony for motivation.
"It's stupid," he said of that idea.

The Cleveland Cavaliers open the 2008-09 season with high hopes tonight on the road against the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics. Repository sports writer Chris Beaven previews a team some think may be the best in LeBron James' career:

Mo Williams brings it up, pass to West, pass to Lebron, dribble dribble dribble, pass to Mo for an open 3. I'm not a big fan of the dribble dribble dribble, but I'd rather give Mo open shots than Lebron shoot contested 15 footers falling away from the hoop.

such an amazingly, poorly officiated game.

Eddie House clearly f's up, saves a ball and is the first to touch it, causing a turnover is possesion, which the officials call correctly. Boston creates a stick about it, and an official gives a phantom make-up call to correct the situation which does not need to be corrected.

NBA officials suck.

must be nice being Paul Pierce getting every phantom call imagineable..some things never change.

Yep Yep. Bad turnovers and coaching in the second half to go with it. Williams looks good, but in order to win this division they have to start faster than usual- and that should begin now.
