Cavs 08-09 Season - Central Div Champs (official thread)

I'm mostly excited for pre-game introductions. Should be taken to new levels. I like Shaq come playoff time though. As I suggested earlier in this thread, Z and Shaq can split minutes, and hopefully bpth are fresh come playoff time.

Z has enevr been able to step his game up to the next level, so he can become the best backup center in the league. Split minutes with Shaq, and let Shaq lay his weight in the playoffs. I doubt there is a better center combo in the NBA now....

And don't listen to Mark Jackson and his stupid ass analysis. Shaq certainly gives the Cavs an ability to guard the Orlando pick and roll. You can put Shaq on Dwight and let him play one on one. You couldn't do that with Z. Shaq at the 5 with LeBron at the 4 gives Cleveland a look they couldn't prudce with Z at the 5 because Z couldn't guard Howard straight up.

I don't know about Shaq defending the P&R but he sure as hell won't be letting Dwight get what he wants around the rim. I'm pumped as there are certainly more moves to be made. In particular I like th idea of signing Charly V to spread the floor if we can't draft Clark. I wouldn't be surprised to see Andy move as he doesn't have a role anymore. You can't play him and Shaq together and he is only an energy guy in my eyes anyway.

I still think Kaman would have been a better long termsolution, but Shaq is not a bad consolation. As we have seen Ferry loves flexability and this definitely gives that to us for the next offseason.

I was really hoping that we would push for a younger big man such as Bosh or Josh Smith but we really don't have the young talent go trade for someone like that. This could be a real good one year fix, if Shaq is healthy in the playoffs this could really work well. Shaq can really clog the lane on D and is a great passer out of the post on offense, plus he can still score with his back to the basket. Just split his and Z's minutes and this should work out ok. Obviously his rotation on defense and PR defense is a slight concern as, is him possibly clogging the lane on offense. Cavs just need to buy a pick now in the top half of the draft. A tall wing that can fit in the rotation Clark or Young would work. I don't forsee Andy being back, and I think we will use our midlevel on a younger big guy, maybe Charlie Villenueva but the Bucks might have enough money to bring him back. Plus, hopefully JJ's back gets right and he can learn the defensive scheme better because he would be a huge plus if he could contribute next year. Another reason Andy is expendable is that I believe Darnell can do a lot of things that Andy did plus he has a 15 foot face up shot that Andy does not. One other thing if someone could chime in on , is there anyway that we could sign and trade Andy? I don't think he is restricted but I'm not sure if we have bird right's on him.

We most certainly can S&T Andy, and I really think this is our best option to grab a 2 guard to start and place West with the seccond unit.

S&T options

I don't think they can let Andy walk. We have no depth with the bigs after this season. Andy and JJ could be a good tandum next season if they can't talk a guy like Bosh into signing. Even then it would be Bosh and Andy.
I would still like to see the Cavs get a tall 2 that can shoot and defend. Bowen might be an option for the right price if he has anything left in his tank. I think this trade puts them on the level where some other FA will come to Cleveland for a year just to win a championship. I'm pumped.

a few things:

1. kaman has had some injury issues the last few years, and who know what playing for LA has done to retard his progress.

2. the rumor is the cavs will use their MLE to sign villenueva. the bucks just traded for amir johnson to play the 4, so they only have enough cash to sign either CV or Ramon Sessions, and they're going with Sessions. that solves cleveland's PF problem.

3. the cavs are looking to move up in the draft to get a guy like earl clark, gerald henderson, or williams. also, childress is crippling atlanta's cap, and cleveland might have enough left to get a deal done with them.

I'm excited for what this move means for Cavaliers Live!

VERY QUOTATIOUS, I PERFORM RANDOM ACTS OF SHAQNESS

For those who don't already know, Shaq is on Twitter: THE_REAL_SHAQ (THE_REAL_SHAQ) on Twitter

As far as him possibly clogging the lane on offense goes... True, he can't pull a defender away from the basket like Z can. But I think his superior strength and hands will open up some interior passing opportunities. LeBron after all is the best passer in the game and I'm sure he'll be driving to the rim and dumping off to Shaq for easy two-handed dunks all year.

1) While they gave up the 46th pick, they may turn right around and buy it back.

2) They are DEFINITELY moving up tonight. Expect anywhere from 6-16, according to those insiede the team. Ideally, they would like to move up and still keep thise years #30, with the thought being getting the taller wing player first, then getting the best available pg with #30. For the most part, this is a shitty draft but it's a good draft for getting a pg.

3) Names they like for the early pick: DeMar DeRozan, Terrance Williams and Earl Clark.

4) Phoenix wanted JJ Hickson in the deal after the Cavs said no to Delonte. The Cavs also said Hickson was a deal breaker and instead gave #46 and cash.

5) With Shaq now in the fold, they are working on getting a pf to fit in with LBJ and the diesel. He needs to have an inside game and be a decent shooter. They have a list of players to fit that need and are currently deciding which way to go. Maybe Charlie V is that player. He's certainly one of the names on that list.

6) I'm not sure that these moves signal the end of Andy. He never was meant to be a starter and has always been a great guy off the bench. If they get him to sign a decent deal (6-7/yr) he'll stay. No one is giving him the rumored 10MM per year. I think the team would rather keep him at a good price and have him come off the bench.

Most of this info is from "Wine and Gold", a guy that is inside the Team and posts occasionally at Realcavsfans.com.

For those that say he'll clog the middle... this is what he brings, a guy that will actually finish strong on all those lil dump passes in the paint LeBron does.

But the first part is what I am excited about. Shaq here in Cleveland will be a BLAST! His tweets, his quotes, his dance moves. How much fun will LeBron and Shaq have on the court?

The only thing this does is piss me off we couldn't have done this at the trade deadline.

Regarding building the team to beat one team, Shaq helps against any team with bigs, ie LA, Boston & Orlando (throw in SA too) So while Orlando seems like the team we are gearing to beat, he isn't going to hurt us against the other elite teams.

So really what is left is figuring out our PF situation with AV or CV along with getting a tall athletic swingman and maybe a true backup PG. Hopefully those last two get solved in the draft (I can see us picking up 2nd round picks for cash so giving up our 2nd rounder meant nothing)

i will simply posit this:

was there any time during the year, that when Z was in the game, that AV or Wallace were clogging the lane in the same manner shaq would?

and even if one of those two were also out of the lane, their defender was nowhere near them because neither is a threat to score outside of 5 feet.

Very true. And neither of those guys can be counted on for any scoring while clogging the lane.
