Cavaliers welcome newest additions
Ferry says Hickson, Jackson have potential with hard work
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND: In professional basketball, the rule is that you can never have too many big guys.
After Thursday's NBA Draft, the Cavaliers find themselves with riches at that position thanks to the selection of forwards J.J. Hickson in the first round and Darnell Jackson via a trade with the Miami Heat.
The Cavs introduced the two Friday at Quicken Loans Arena. With the additions, the Cavs have six big men on their roster, which doesn't bother General Manager Danny Ferry.
''It's what most NBA rosters have. I think we have a blend now of guys with experience and some guys who can grow and learn and hopefully turn into real NBA players and be part of the rotation,'' he said. ''I think that both of these guys, if they work hard, have a chance and an opportunity, hopefully, at some point to be rotational players and establish themselves as real NBA players.''

Draft is just one step in path Cavs must take to improve, says Bud Shaw

J.J. Hickson says he's ready to become "the player they want me to be." He's got half a chance.
Living up to Danny Ferry's hopes are one thing. To be the player Cavs fans want? No way. Not gonna happen. To do that, he'd have to be Michael Redd.
"Bye, bye LeBron," was the first reader reaction to the selection of Hickson on Cleveland.com.
Surprise, surprise; draft night didn't transform Ferry into Merlin the Magician. Why that was expected with the Cavs holding the 19th pick is uncertain.
Ferry didn't have a ping pong ball with the Cavs logo on it as a chip to play in helping to bring a title to town. While James is under contract, he won't.

It's karma? Newest Cavaliers have ties to franchise

Matt York/Associated PressIn the NCAA title game, Kansas' Darnell Jackson (32) beat nearly the entire Memphis team to this loose ball. The Jayhawks won the national title in overtime, and Jackson was obtained by the Cavaliers late Thursday night in a draft day deal.

J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson have ties to the Cavaliers that go back much further than their acquisitions by the team during Thursday night's NBA draft. Hickson, the N.C. State freshman forward taken with the No. 19 pick in the first round, played for Wolfpack coach Sid Lowe, a Cavs assistant to Mike Fratello from 1994-99.
"He tried to prepare me for the NBA overall," Hickson said. "Everything he said was from an NBA perspective."
Jackson's pull to the team goes even deeper.
"Ever since I started playing basketball [at 15] I wanted to play with LeBron James," said Jackson, the Kansas forward who was taken by Miami with the No. 52 pick and then traded to Cleveland late Thursday for the lower of the team's two second-round picks in 2009. "I always said I would love the chance to run up and down the court with him."

3. there are rumors of AV, wally, 2009 #1, and either DJ or Snow to Golden State for Baron Davis.
If you have time today, would you call Ferry and tell him we'd prefer he make the same trade and get Redd? thanks... I'll pay if it's a long distance call

Carter staying after Cavs offer Szczerbiak
by Dave D'Alessandro/Star-Ledger staff Friday June 27, 2008, 11:09 PM

NOTEBOOK
The Nets may seem to be in the process of blowing up their roster, but if they truly wanted to experience a true demolition job, they had their chance Wednesday night.

As they were putting some of the finishing touches on the Richard Jefferson-Yi Jianlian deal, the Nets received a call from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who offered them Wally Szczerbiak and his expiring, $13.2 million salary for Vince Carter.
According to two Eastern Conference executives, who asked for anonymity so as not to spill Rod Thorn's secrets, the Nets considered it -- but not for very long.

Thorn would not comment on the discussion yesterday, but while the deal would have crippled his offense, it would have freed up yet more money for the 2010 free-agent market. The Nets have only $36 million earmarked toward player salaries that summer, and the removal of Carter's four-year contract would cut that in half.
They must be grasping for straws to try and take on an enormous contract like Vince's who's half the player he was 5 years ago. I guess any deal with value will have to come at the deadline, unless they swing a deal for crap. Because even if you unload Wally for Vince, you're overpaying for better crap and hamstringing yourself for future free-agency.

I don't understand what management is doing. If the deal for Carter goes through, not only do barely help our current roster, you're helping New Jersey entice LeBron even more because they will have even more financial room to bring in another superstar. I think people are forgetting the Nets just tried to trade for Carmelo so they can pair him with LeBron in 2010. Taking Carter off the books now is only helping the franchise you have to be on the lookout for.

And the supposed Barron Davis rumor off of HoopsHype.com was shot down by several sources, so I'm not to opptimistic.

2 rookie free agent pick-ups I'd love the Cavs to make are for Tyrone Brazelton and Josh Duncan.

I'm pretty surprised with Duncan's advanced offensive game he wasn't taken by anyone. He forces defenders to play him close because he has exceptional touch, but he can get to the hoop. He'd be an excellent scoring option from the 4.

I think the knock on him was probably rebounding, but keep in mind he bang with centers b/c he was generally the biggest player Xavier ran with.

Nevermind on most of these guys..already been picked up:

Here's a great link to where most of the undrafted FA's will end up: Hip 2 Da Game: Undrafted Free Agents - NBA Draft - Summer League

Of note..it looks like Othello will be headed to Atlanta

Drew Neitzel to Minnesota

Josh Duncan and Pat Calethes to Miami

Chris Lofton is expected to play for Charlotte's squad

No word on JamarButler off this page.

ok. if you have the time, call Fegan and tell him to quit blocking trades for AV because he's scared it will hurt his pocketbook.

Cleveland Cavaliers not likely to seek big-name NBA free agents

Tuesday, July 01, 2008Mary Schmitt Boyer
Plain Dealer Reporter
The phone calls started at midnight as the Cavaliers jumped into NBA free agency, which begins today.
But just because they're talking doesn't mean anything will happen when the signing period opens July 9. In fact, given the Cavs are almost $25 million over the salary cap of $55.63 million, it's highly unlikely they'll make a big splash in the free-agent pool -- no matter how much they like players like Boston Celtics forward James Posey of Twinsburg and Golden State guard Baron Davis.
General Manager Danny Ferry repeatedly has said how much he likes his team and how much he values continuity.

Danny Ferry you will be a joke of a manager if you do not attempt a trade this summer. Because then you can kiss Lebron goodbye. Speaking of Lebron, has be made a list of players he wants playing beside him? If so and Ferry is ignoring it, he's a dumbass.

Lebron doesn't appear eager to squelch the Brooklyn rumors if you've seen his latest comments.

He's got to be the most difficult athlete for me to decide upon as far as likability. If he leaves because of the endorsement money, fuck him. If he stays because he loves Cleveland, then he's one of my favorite athletes of all time.

We won't know the answer for two years. So I, like many other Cleveland fans, have a tough time embracing him just yet.
